what cables do I need to purchase?
You need a network cable. (Sometimes called a "CAT5" cable or "ethernet" cable.)
You also need a supported USB network adapter.
Anyone with a non-DirecTV Series 2 TiVo shouldn't have any problems with
Vonage
, as you can take advantage of (in my opinion) the biggest and only advantage standalone TiVos have: functional USB ports, and the associated networking services. I seem to recall there are some issues with initial setup without a landline, but once the TiVo is up and running you can use a wired/wireless USB ethernet adapter to get your daily calls over broadband... no phone call required! Once DirecTV pulls their collective head outta their collective @$$ and enables the USB ports on DirecTV TiVos, we won't have to worry about crappy
Vonage
firmwares not fixing anything anymore, and we'll be able to use our broadband for daily calls too.

If it makes you feel any better, based on the responses here, updating the firmware probably wouldn't fix anything anyway!

Sorry for the delay in re-visiting this thread. After the initial feedback we've gotten (mostly from you guys) the NEW firmware is nwo available to everyone. Simply call ANYONE at
Vonage
, and just ask them to upgrade your firmware (its all done with a click of a button)
NOTE -- Try calling from a NON
Vonage
phone or place a call while your not on the phone, because it will not download the firmware while your on the phone. Also keep in mind after it sends the request it can take 3-7 minutes for it to effectively download and write the firmware successfully. DO NOT turn off or remove power from the device at this point.
All should work alot better.
ahhhh...this is not correct. You, just can't call anyone at
Vonage
. I'm having a difficult time to find anyone at
Vonage
that even is aware that a firmware upgrade is possible. Of course, my experience tells me this is the level of service to be expected at
Vonage
.
1 1/2 hours on the phone and my call was dropped. I never did get to speak to anyone who could help or even knew about a firmware update.

Yeah, I spoke to a CSR yesterday who insisted that it was impossible for users to upgrade their own firmware, and that even if it was possible, it was certainly impossible for
Vonage
CSRs to email out firmware images.
I love how the
Vonage
CSRs answer their phones, too. Most of the time I call I get "Hello?" like I called someone at home.

Maybe we need a new thread discussing the
Vonage
CS "opportunities". Bet that would fill up in a hurry. And since
Vonage
said they have nothing to do with this forum, ........

I have talked to two CSRs. First time I got the firmware update and the second made some unspedified adjustments to my connection. I am also now making calls to the 212 area code with dialing prefix * 99. The Tivo will now make some test calls successfully but fails to make any daily call I attempt.
Can anyone suggest other dialing codes or prefixes and tell me what they mean?
My wife suggests that we upgade to a series 2, but I don't believe that the service contract transfers over. Any suggestions?
Tivo Series 1 (not Direct TV)
Linksys Firmware Version: 1.28.00 Voice Version: 3.1.3(LI) Feb 21 2005 Status Broadband Router with 2 Phone Ports RT31P2
Comcast cable
Your right - your subscription doesn't carry over if you get a series 2 tivo.
I have a series one tivo, and got it working with
Vonage
by using a cheap external modem as described here:

What version of firmware did they send you? I couldn't get mine to upgrade. The version I have is WRT54GP2_v1.28.00_000_VM_2.00.14_LIVa_combin_code

I've noticed the power led on my WRT54GP2 is flashing. The manual says it will flash when updating. Mine continues to flash. I'm wondering if this because of a failed firmware upgrade that I tried last night. Anyone have an idea?
