I'm currently using the Linksys PAP2 TA. If I want to change over to the WRT54GP2 to take advantage of QOS, how can I do that and keep my primary phone number?
I guess this would be same question if my PAP2 became defective and I had to replace it with another Vonage supported router. |

Buy a WRT54GP2 and tell Vonage you've changed devices and give them the MAC id of the new one.
Don't expect any rebate on the WRT54GP2 unless you activate a new account. |

I try to not answer a question with a question; however, I have also considered changing to a new router.
I prefer the neat design of having several components in one box; but, are there any technical or reliability advantages in changing to teh WRT 54GP2. I appologize in advance if the answer proves to be too obvious or simple. |

The advantage for changing to the WRT54GP2 is that it can prioritize (with QOS - Quality of Service) the voice traffic over the other network traffic on your network so that your voice conversation takes priority and is not impacted.
The PAP2 does not support QOS although this does not imply that using the PAP2 means that you will not have good quality voice performance. The PAP2 may be sufficient for your needs. The form factor of the PAP2 is also ideal if you would like to be mobile with your Voip service.

I thought about reducing the number of boxes on my desktop too, but I didn't like the WRT54GP2.
First you pay a hefty premium over the ordinary Linksys wireless router to have integrated Voip.
Second, if you ever dump Vonage for another provider or POTS then you've wasted a lot of money for your downgraded-functionality router.
Third, the firmware is locked by Vonage, you can't upgrade to newer or better firmware, only Vonage can do that. If you dump Vonage then you're stuck with the firmware Vonage left there. You can't upgrade to newer Linksys-provided or third-party firmware. Ever.

What I've decided to do is purchase the Belkin Wireless Pre-N Router F5D8230-4 which supports QOS for Voip. I was able to purchase one from eBay for a very good price and am just waiting for shipment.
This should give me a router which will provide me the flexibility that the WRT54G2 can't provide with the enhanced functionality of the Belkin router. I would then continue with the PAP2 that I already have.
Thank you all for your comments. |

I have been waiting to convert over to all cisco myself with a cisco 831 router followed by a cisco switch TBD and lastly cisco ata-186 TA. This would be pinnacle in networking and Voip. |

Hi TotalDistinction,
I've been looking at that router you suggested as well, but it's very pricey (especially after factoring in matching desktop card). You mentioned you got a good deal off ebay...if you don't mind me asking, how much did you manage to get it for? I'm holding out until I know I can get a better deal, but I'd like to know what a deal is.
Thanks if you can help a brother out. |

My apologies for not getting back sooner. I haven't been on the forums for a very long time as you can tell.
I got the Belkin router off of eBay for $117.52US (approx. $143.46CAD) from "athenamodeling". you may want to contact him directly if he has another one. Keep in mind that there is a chance that you may get hit with customs or duty charges of approx. $20CAD.
I've now started to see this router at Best Buy, The Source (former Radio Shack, and likely Future Shop. I think it's approx. $190 at these places (possibly cheaper).
Sorry for the delay in my response...
