PostPosted: Sat Apr 23, 2005 9:34 pm    Post subject: Motorola VT1005v stuck at 4-blinks registering -unauthorized Reply with quote Back to top

I've used Vonage for a year. Just in the past few weeks, I've had to manually restart my Motorola VT1005v adaptor several times because it gets stuck in 4-blinks (Registering) mode.

Today I performed a packet capture while it was stuck in that mode and the capture shows that atlas5.atlas.vonage.net (or some IP addresses which the adaptor ends up talking to after performing a DNS lookup on the name atlas5.atlas.vonage.net) was responding to the adaptor's SIP REGISTER packets with "401 Unauthorized" (register / unauthorized, over and over again).

I see in the packet capture that my adaptor had this same unhelpful conversation with five different Vonage SIP server IP addresses.

Later in the day, one of the same IP addresses which was telling me earlier that I was Unauthorized happily carried a phone conversation from my adaptor (After I power cycled the adaptor).

Anyone seen this / any idea why this would be happening?

Thanks

Since my service works most of the time, exactly what am I going to get out of waiting on hold to speak to customer service?

Is there a specific time when I should call, such as the next time I notice the 4-blinks problem?

I can provide the packet capture with the exact data showing the communication between my VT1005v and Vonage's servers at the time. Would that be sufficient to save me the trouble of the call?

Update:

1. The long periods of "401 Unauthorized" were evidently not a problem with my own equipment, but rather with the Vonage servers during those few days, because I didn't do anything about it and that particular problem went away.

2. Evidently, it is in the nature of SIP registration, at least as SIP registration is built in to both the Motorola VT1005v and the Linksys RT31P2, to have this dialog:

1. My VT1005v or RT31P@ to Vonage:

3. My VT1005v or RT31P@ to Vonage:

All the same as the first time, except -
3(A) CSeq line is updated from 1 to 2:

3(B) an Authorization Digest is included:
Authorization: Digest username="my_phone_number",realm="216.115.27.24",nonce
="...........",uri="sip:5.voncp.com:5061",algorithm=MD5,response="..................."

4. Vonage in response:

200 OK

Anyone here sufficiently familiar with SIP to know if this is "normal" or if this is just a semi-broken way that Vonage has implemented SIP with its servers and its chosen customer premises equipment (VT1005v, RT31P2)?

Further, why does the adaptor go through this "Register", "No", "Register (with Authorization)", "OK" dance from time to time - what causes it to lose its registration status and/or to forget to use Authorization each and every time (or is it just that the nonce must be chosen each time by the SIP Server?)

What happens if one of these unpredictable re-registration events should come up in the middle of a Voice over IP phone call? Would the call drop? Would a packet drop while the adaptor reauthenticated / re-registered?

I had something similar happen over the last few days. In my setup I have two Vonage routers - one for business (Linksys RT31P2) and one for home (Motorola VT1005). A few days ago the Motorola router was at 4 blinks. I power cycled, it would connect for a few minutes, and then it would drop back to 4 blinks again. The Linksys router never missed a beat, and has been working flawlessly.

To make a long story short, I talked to Vonage support and they shipped me a new router (another Linksys this time, by request - I don't like the Motorola router at all) because the Motorola seems to have gone bad.

So, I thought I'd let you know in case you have a similar problem - it may be a bad router.
