Hey there guys and gals. I transferred my POTS line to Vonage on February 23rd and am still waiting on my number being transferred to Vonage from Qwest.

Vonage customer care claims that they are "waiting on the service provider" to implement the number change.

Mean while I am being billed for both Vonage and Qwest service.

I can't figure this out, why would it take this long? FCC regulations require that cell providers transfer your number in a maximum of 3 business days, is what is going on here with Vonage and Qwest even legal?

I'm planning on firing off a complaint to the FCC over this but am interested in what other options I have.

I like my Vonage service but I'm totally ticked off over this number transfer. 20 business days I could have stomached... 40+ business days should be considered false advertising about their capability for doing a number port.

I had the same problem with BELLSOUTH. I called BELLSOUTH and asked if there was problem. They said no problem; all Vonage had to do was ask.

Called Vonage and they admitted that they had it scheduled but had not gotten to it yet.

As a result of my phone call, they gave me Vonage credit until the LNP was completed. In that way, I only had to pay POTS charges. Suggest you do the same.

1) Vonage (as well as the other Voip providers) are not regulated by the FCC as it is not a phone company, it is a data company (as decided,so far, by the courts in NY and MN ir MI - don't remember which) which is how it is able to keep it's rates as low as they are and not have to charge all the taxes the POTS & Cellular carriers do.
2) Vonage states a "MINIMUM" of 20 business days to transfer a number
3) Vonage will credit your account for time AFTER the 20 Business days have passed if you ask. It's not a "rule" but is done to help with the "being charged by 2 phone companies" issue (assuming the reason for the delay isn't an omission on your part). Did you ask?
4) Your other options are obvious. Accept a new Vonage phone number, drop your Vonage service ..... or wait for your number to port. Smile Another option is you also complain to the FCC or the PUCs so they can force Vonage to be regulated like the telcos. Then you will get your number ported quicker and pay 3x as much for that privledge. Eek

Why it takes so long......

Lots of possible reasons.
1) Customer can mess up (or not send) their required paperwork
2) Vonage can "lose" the customers paperwork
3) The process is basically a manual process between 3 providers (Vonage, Vonage's 3rd party partner provider who actually does the transfer for Vonage, and your telco)
4) 3rd party CLEC can screw up
5) your carrier can screw up
6) Your port can be rejected for myriads of reasons
7) You could have a pick-freeze on your telco account
..... and on and on and on.

It's pretty funny that your automatic assumption is that this is probably the fault of the CLEC, missing paperwork, etc. Yet everytime I call Vonage they tell me that they are waiting for a scheduled time with their "service provider" which I am guessing from your comments means this 3rd party company that does the number ports.

Very poor service IMO.... you can point out how inexpensive Vonage is by being unregulated, etc, but the bottom line is that Vonage says they can port your old phone number and from the many comments here it seems that they hold out as long as possible hoping the number port request gets dropped so that they don't have to pay this 3rd party company to port the number.

While I'm (very) far from a Vonage fangirl your response is written without any inside knowledge at all. The VAST MAJORITY of ports go through just fine. Some are quick (best I've read so far is 10 calendar days) and some take time. Some get screwed up and take forever and a day. In any business growing faster then it ever expected and dealing with hundreds of thousands of people there will always be those who are having problems and some have problems worse then others. Obviously the hundreds of thousands of satisifed customers aren't going to take the time to post and say "everything went great" although a few actually do (read some of the messages). For the most part (and it's great they do) people come to boards like this to vent their problems. Of course one only hears one side of the issue and doesn't see or read exactly why some of the horror stories occur and you also don't hear from the "silent majority" who are happier then pigs in sh1t. Smile Remember that what you read here is from the tiniest minority of the users of the 650,000+ lines currently in operation and in no way represents a scientific sample of all Vonage users.

As for the responses you get from Vonage, take then for what they're worth and who writes, I mean cuts and pastes, them.

And again, you do have the option of cancelling your service and going back to where everything worked to your satisfaction. There are no contracts or ETF's like cell companies do in order to force you to stay with them for 1 or 2 years.

If you think Vonage is delaying the ports intentionally to avoid paying the clecs, with all due respect, that's totally absurd.

Heart ,
VG
