Hello all -- I'm new to this forum and to Vonage. I ordered my vonage system Friday and am still waiting for delivery. Hopefully I'll get it soon. I had a few questions about the vonage system with Tivo. Every night the Tivo calls in to update itself. I've read there was a compatibility issue with Vonage.
Is this true, is so is there a fix coming soon?
Thanks..
Hopefully I'll get my system soon!

I can confirm this. My s1 TIVO "phones home" nightly with (after 7 weeks) ZERO problems.
My alarm system works too. I haven't tested PPV on my satellite, tho.
Now if only I can get my Gemstar GEB 1150 ebook reading device http://www.gemstar-ebook.com/ebcontent/devices/default.asp to actually connect over Vonage, I will be happy again.
Are there any "tricks" for getting a device with a 33kbps modem to happily connect?
Thanks in advance,
Marty |

I don't have Tivo but I do have my alarm, fax machine, fax modem and my whole house (voice) on Vonage and it works like a dream.
My 2 cents worth.

Another thought about anolog modems over vonage.
This may be way out there, but it is a thought that could/would eliminate all problems with modems. I have no clue whether the hardware in the cisco device or on the vonage edge (where the call interfaces with the POTS telco) could even support it.
Right now all voice calls (except 911) have a prefix of "1" (one). I find 11 digit dialing truly annoying, but I can live with it.
What if the cisco box were reprogrammed such that another prefix, e.g. "2", would signal the box that this was a modem call? The box could then "play modem" and pretend that it was the other side of the call. The local device would think that it was interfacing with the actual end modem.
While this was going on, the vonage gear at the edge could also "play modem" and pretend to be the modem of the local device. The only data needing to be transferred over the net would be the actual data of the modem and maybe handshaking signals, not the VoIP representation of the tones. There would be almost zero latency and modems at each end could connect at the highest negotiated speed.
This would ensure that *ALL* analog modem gear could work, so long as it used a protocal that the cisco box and vonage edge gear could spoof.
Does this make sense? Is there enough of the right hardware at each end to support this? Heck, for all I know, vonage is working on this right now.
Eventually, all analog modems will go away, but look how long it took rotary dialing to completely go away -- hint: it's been like three decades and it is still here.

I don't know if anyone replied to this... but the Tivo Series 2 units now support using the Internet for updates. So I'd consider buying a 3Com USB NIC and hooking the Tivo up to your internet connection.

Gerhard,
Thanks for the reply. I am ok with my Tivo as it works over vonage. Even if it did not, I could switch to WiFi to get it done.
The bigger issue is that I have another device which will NOT work over vonage. I am sure that more devices exist and it would be nice to have some sort of "analog modem" compatibility mode on the service.
Thanks again. |

The only series 2 Tivo that will not work the above mentioned units are the series 2 HDVR Directv DVR w/Tivo. The usb ports are not enabled and can not be used. There is a hack available to turn them on, but this should only be tried by the best of hackers, as you would be messing with the core software. I have not heard from anyone who had tried this. I would also bet that the Directv call (that is made seperatly from the semi-daily Tivo call) would still tried to be made over the phone line even if you enabled the usb ports. |

Generally the Series1 Tivos will work fine (The non DTV kind) however series2 and DirecTV models just can't seem to slow down far enough, There is a predial code to slow down the modems like ,#219 or something (I can't remember right off hand) however you should be able to find it on www.tivocommunity.com |
