Most people in Newfoundland have at least unlimited in-province calling. That means virtually anyone will be able to call me for free as long as I have a 709 area code.
There is also an emotional element to it. Somehow it just seems right to have a 709 area code when you live in Newfoundland. Unlike other provinces, we have only ever had the 709 area code and there is a strong emotional attachment to it for a great many Newfoundlanders living in and out of the province.
