First, here's my setup:

Code:

DSL MODEM -> COMPUTER (running ICS) x.x.0.0/0
                                 |
                                 |
                  Vonage ROUTER (DHCP/NAT) x.x.15.0/0 -> WIRELESS AP
                                                                                                  |
                                                                                                  |
                                                                            3 Computers (1 wired, 2 wireless)

Problem #1:

I'm in South Korea, where I think they're trying to prevent people from using routers, so they've implemented a DHCP expiration of 20 minutes! This causes my router to hang for a minute or two before it knows that the ip has expired, for some reason. I think some firmware upgrade would fix the problem, but I can't wait on that, so I've figured a way around it:

Workaround:

I use another computer as the router, using ICS and two nics. This keeps my connection alive; my phone works; and the internet works on all my computers.

Problem #2:

The computer that's wired to my wireless access point, is my file-server/multi-media computer (2.2GHZ, 1GB RAM, 1.2TB HD SPACE) and I need to access it from the computer running ICS. I can ping the ICS computer.

What I've tried:

I've tried disabling the DHCP/NAT on the router and using the ip range of the ICS network, but it seems my XP box doesn't do DHCP, so ips aren't getting assigned to the router and my other computers. If I use static ips, I still can't connect to the internet and my phone doesn't work, for some reason. With DHCP/NAT everything works except file-sharing.

I think putting a third nic card in my ICS computer and plugging it into the Vonage router would work (it would get assigned an ip in the range of the other computers), but I don't really want to take up 2 ports for 1 computer. Anyone have any ideas?

My suggestion: Pls dont make fun of a person's circumstances. He has taken the trouble of presenting a detailed technical description of his problem. It would be nice to be able to give him some technical help, instead of ridiculing his country.

LOL

That was actually funny, and I think that's what he meant by it, so no harm done! Hey! I can't leave. I work here! Razz

Actually, given the choice between having to watch my back all the time, in the states, or a crappy internet connection, I'd choose the crappy internet connection! Razz

....anyway....back to the topic. I think I'll just throw another card in my computer. I don't feel like waiting for an answer. If I figure out something else, I'll post back here. I don't mind sharing what I learn.

omniscentdeveloper,

from what little I know, there is good reason why the two computers cannot talk to each other. they all need to be on the same subnet. Consider putting all the computers and Vonage router on the same subnet i.e. xx.xx.0.xx. Just changing the computers ips without changing the Vonage router could cause problems since the Vonage router is on a different subnet i.e. xx.xx.15.0

Change ever computer and router to the same xx.xx.0.xx ip address setting.

That should correct the access to the fileserver issue.

well thanks for not taking it personally ... i just think that its kind of silly that they are trying to prevent anyone from using a router. i think he did a wonderful job explaining his problem ... i just didn't have a technical answer for it.
