PostPosted: Thu Apr 21, 2005 7:36 am    Post subject: What UDP port to open for firewall Reply with quote Back to top

Hi,

I am using Linksus RT31P2 behind a firewall.

My firewall is configured twith DENY policy. So far, I read about opening up UDP port 10000 for SIP, and UDP port 10000 to 20000 for voice traffic. This worked. However, I noticed from firewall log that RT31P2 is attempting to connect the following ports:
UDP port 21
UDP port 69 (TFTP)
UDP port 2400

On my firewall, these are all blocked, but the phone still work. Anybody know what are those port attempts for?

Many thanks!

SIP ports 5060 through 5061 using UDP protocol
NTP port 123 using UDP protocol
TFTP port 69 using UDP protocol
DNS port 53 using UDP protocol
RTP ports 10,000 through 20,000 using UDP protocol

Those are the ports you need to open posted by Vonage.

Thanks.

I may not have made myself clear - I have opened those ports (5060,5061,10000-20000) and the usual NTP, DNS posrts, the phone is 'working'.

However, I do see that the RT31P2 is periodically trying to connect using UDP (21, 69, 2400), which is very strange to me. What I wanted to know is whether blocking those ports will create any problem or break anything? Should I allow those through? Is the RT31P2 trying to do anything useful through those ports?

Thanks.

I got a friend to sniff the IP traffic, and apparently you are right, it is attempting some form of 'update' behevior - seems to be looking for some .xml file using UDP 69 (TFTP), attempts this 12 times every 3 seconds, then tries UDP port 21 asking for the same .xml file (again 12 times every 3 seconds), and finally, tries UDP port 2400 for 12 times every 3 seconds. Stop for sometime, and repeat the sequence all over.

I can do without this 'auto' update for now, unless someone says otherwise.

I have checked the corresponding page for RT31P2 and found that the "Firmware" section is grayed out. Is it not available now due to no update, or it is not possible to update the firmware manually by design? If manual update is not possible, then, I see your point in allowing the TFTP (UDP port 69) through.

Thanks. Looks like UDP 69 should really be allowed, though I do not feel that comfortable having the firmware of the router updated via TFTP - with minimum form of authentication.

I would certainly like to see on the 'wish-list' for this updating to be more transparent, showing up as some form of message in the status page, or better, do what Windows Updating does : tell you an update is available, ask for permission to perform the update, and ask for permission to do that automatically in the future.

I have no need to open any ports for my firewall and that's the way I want it. Firewall testing programs have been unable to break through any port I have and that's the way it should be.
