Post subject: Voice Admin Page on RT31P2 Router
If you go to
http://192.168.15.1/Voice_adminPage.htm,
you can access the administration section of the router which deals with the voice ports. I want to light up the second port in order to use my office's SIP proxy server at home.
What's the login and password, though?

That's nice and all, but I BOUGHT the router as part of my package. I OWN the router. So for
Vonage
to hold that over me is kinda sorta really big time illegal. You can't sell a third parties product and then not allow the person who OWNS it to use all of its feature functions that they purchased with it.
I'm sure someone out there has the password.

Its not illegal. There is nothing in there that customers need access to. What's illegal would be to activate another phone line on there by tampering with the device.
The password is different for every device, only senior techs here at
Vonage
know the password, and there is no way anyone will give it out. The options in the voice admin page are for our use only and like I said there is nothing in there that you would realy need access to.

If you cancel your
Vonage
service we don't cut off you with the ability to use your "router". The voice admin page deals with our servers and lots of stuff you would never need to access, let alone if you leave
Vonage
since you bought your adapter.
"1.6 Tampering with the Device or Service
You agree not to change the electronic serial number or equipment identifier of the Device, or to perform a factory reset of the Device, without express permission from
Vonage
in each instance which
Vonage
may deny in its sole discretion.
Vonage
reserves the right to terminate your Service should you tamper with the Device, leaving you responsible for the full month's charges to the end of the current term, including without limitation unbilled charges, plus a disconnect fee, all of which immediately become due and payable.
You agree not to hack or disrupt the service or to make any use of the Service that is inconsistent with its intended purpose or to attempt to do so

What I chose to do with a device that I purchased, that I *own* is of no business to
Vonage
. That I wish to use the second port to access my company's SIP proxy and the fact that
Vonage
holds the password to allow me that ability is clearly illegal.
It'd be like purchasing a car and having the manufacturer FORCE you to come to them every time you needed new tires.
The router is *mine* and if I want to change the settings on the second port, that's my own business, not Vonage's. And if I happen to make an error and cause trouble with the first port, then it's Vonage's responsibility as a service provider to provide me with the technical support necessary to re-establish my service.
All I want to do is insert my own settings to use port 2 on my router. My router has TWO ports. I bought a TWO PORT router. If
Vonage
will not "let" me use the second port, then they are clearly doing something that's illegal. How can they withhold that information from me legally? It's MY router, not theirs.
I certainly think that his might require retaining legal council and exploring case law. I'm almost certain that there's established case law that confirms that they are doing is illegal.
But I will have to hand it to you guys. This is the fastest I have EVER received word back from technical support. Typically I have to wait on hold for an hour or more to get a simple question answered. Funny how when I start nosing around at your big corporate secrets and trying to find out what makes the router tick in order to use it for my purposes as well that you guys all come out of the wood work.
Perhaps you were equally as attentive to the needs of your customers, the only really big complaint people have about
Vonage
wouldn't be that their customer service is so absolutely reprehensible.
Now put that in your I/O port and smoke it.

It would be nice if they would give us a "little" access to do things such as raise output and ringer voltage but I do understand the need to keep these things locked down to their own techs.
You dont want people messing with those settings that could disrupt your phone service unless they know what they are doing.
There is no need to be rude about it though. If you do not like
Vonage
there are other
Voip
providers that give you the access you want.

Unfortunately,
Vonage
isn't the only company that does this sort of thing. For example, can you buy a cable modem, sign up for a cable provider and have complete control over your cable modem? The ISP does all firmware upgrades and all tweaking of settings on YOUR cable modem. I wish that the consumer could have more control over the devices that they have purchased.

It's not a matter of being rude, it's a matter of being FIRM.
Vonage
is notorious for their HORRIBLE customer service, and it strikes me as odd that I was responded to so quickly for this matter, but if I didn't have dial tone, I'd have had to wait for hours or days to get a response.
