This forum is just chock full of amateur attorneys, isn't it?
This is precisely why
Vonage
will never make it. The attitude of this board reflect the corporate customer attitude of
Vonage
. The spoils in the
Voip
war will go to the companies that realize that the customer's monthly payments keep the lights on. Certainly not the companies with the ostrich approach of keeping their heads buried in the sand.
Vonage
: spend less time and money trying to get more (new) customers and spend a little bit of time and research on customer retention, and developing loyalty through service.

Well, well, I could not have written a better text book definition of generalization if I tried.
You my friend Dave2007 are either blind or can not read.

Are you guys actually
against
Dave's right to hack his own hardware?
Vonage
doesn't have to help people unlock their devices, but if Dave wants to figure it out on his own and share the info with everyone, then more power to him.

Hacking done for hacking sake is one thing, and something I enjoy doing and support... BUT, Dave's attitude sours me against helping him in any way, shape, or form.

From the looks of it, he didn't come to ask for your help... he came to tell people that he was going to try and solve the infamous locked router problem.
I theorize that unlocking a router will kick it off the
Vonage
network. If that turns out to be the case, then there won't be any risk to
Vonage
if he succeeds. That is, assuming the're not selling the PAP2s at a loss, which would be pretty stupid.

I'm not sure when someone would want to mess around with the PAP2 when the Sipura units (same basic unit) can be had for less than what the PAP2s are selling for retail.....and the Sipura units come with full support and plenty of 3rd party toys for them. I don't view the locked routers to be a "problem", as they're doing exactly what they were designed to do.

From what I've read, I think the PAP2 is mostly a repackaged Sipura SPA-2000. A quick froogle search shows that those cost $70 or more. PAP2s are much cheaper.
And, yes, the PAP2 does exactly what it was designed to do, but why stop there when you can make it do more?

Have not had my first cup of coffee yet...
If he wants to crack his pap2 for his own use, then great, go nuts etc. But the attitude of "I will post it all over the internet for everyone" is where my issue starts to come into play. If that does happpen, and say it is suvccessful, although most likely
Vonage
will detect it and boot him off, then there is a bigger issue. Now
Vonage
has to take a good cunchk of time away from requested upgrades etc and new enhancements to get the patches done that should not have been an issue in the first place. That extra time, money eventually gets passed on to the consumer.
With all of these issues etc that have come up with routers being locked to
Vonage
, and most come from pretty experienced people, the Sipura seems like a much better product for more experienced people that want alot more customization.
Picture someone who is a fairly experiences in say, cars, not buying a powerful enough automobile...They wanted a higherend model of car, but bought the lower end becuase it was cheaper. Can you get that Civic up to 200+ hoursepower? Sure but you will need work arounds etc. And for all the time spent complaining to Honda that Civics don't have superchargers, when they could have either bought the better car and be satisfied from day one, or just spent the energy on laywers, classaction suits, trying to get Honda to make a very powerful Civic, it just wont happen.
So, hack all you want, if you get it to work, more power to you...Just don't then complain that you can't connect to the
Vonage
network, as you were forewarned...And I would hate to see my bil increase due to extra development time fending off pissed off
Vonage
Subscribers.

If the password is not forthcoming on this forum, then I will have no choice but to reverse engineer the device - which by the way is EXTREMELY LEGAL - I have signed nothing agreeing to not do that. Once I have had to spend my time to do this, I will post the password ALL OVER THE INTERNET
.
Is he ranting on empty?
Tsk Tsk
Is he a reincarnation of the starter of this thread, jzacuto?

Post subject: Hi everyone
jzacuto Dave2007 any reverse engineering is illegal.
Just because you buy two phone ports does not mean you can use two ports.
If you haven't forgot you are using
Vonage
and all linksys phone ports are using
Vonage
. You have to pay, and get authorization to use the 2 ports. If anyone is illegally getting all ports working I think thats considered piracy, and maybe against the FCC code. Don't get yourself into trouble jzacuto, or Dave2007 or you could be arrested, and your router confisicated. If you really want two phone ports to work tell
Vonage
you want the 2 port service cause Hacking, pirating, or terminating TOS is not a good way to get what you want.
Also it is not illegal for
Vonage
to refuse to give you the password for that secret page.
Also what does going into the secret
Vonage
router settings got to do with you not owning it. You do own it if
Vonage
lets you keep it, you can have internet, you can have a firewall, you have so many options to change in the router so if you own it you own it. The
Vonage
only settings are for
Vonage
only and if a
Vonage
customer got into those settings then that can conpromise vonages security, and service. Dave, and jzacuto you don't know what your messing with. They do say curiosity killed the cat.
