From all the edgy rants of jzacuto, (and I am surprized that the thread has not been locked yet) he seems to want the equivalent of the local bell giving direct access to its lines, instead of having to go through the local switches.

You pay your money, and take what you are told to get for the amount of money. You are buying a service, and that does not give any service subscriber carte blanche to do as he pleases.

Plainly, jzacuto's whining, and toothless threats of litigation are over-the-top, flat-out wrong. and other compound adjectives.

Paying a toll on the turnpike does not give one the "right" to go 90 MPH.

jzacuto is merely paying that toll, and is upset because the "mean, evil-hearted" state trooper will not let him go 90. The solution: SUE the cop. <<Shaking my head.>>

Please return the router, as was said before, and go back to the baby bell. You will be helping this forum by bothering someone else.

Just as Vonage, the nations largest provider of Voip service, was ORDERED today to provide full 911 service to its subscribers, I'm sure issues like this one will come to the courts where, inevitably, the courts will side with the subscriber, not the provider.

I don't think anyone will need emergency services over not having a password.

That is, I guess, if you get so worked up over not having the password and have a heart attack ... Wink

It's really not all that big of a deal in the end. It was just a matter of a big corporation telling me. "No! You can't have access to the product you purchase out-right and wholly own."

That's... just... not... right.

Paying a toll and asking to go 90 on a highway is endangering lives. Purchasing a router and asking to be able to use it as it was designed to be used is just common sense.

You know, with all the crap going on in the world today reading this thread is a good source of humor. Reading a grown adult (I use that term loosely) rant on for a month saying MINE MINE MINE! just like my 2 year old does is quite entertaining....
I needed the laugh...If you don't like what you have, go get something else. You signed the contract, tough luck...Cancel your service, go back to your cabin in the woods, because this is almost sounding like a manifesto....

Happy Friday and BIG THANKS to the Vonage technician who helped me yesterday. You guys catch alot of junk on here, but here is on guy saying thanks...

Well this reminds me of the early days of the TiVO forum... to hack or not to hack (BTW, good luck figuring out what definition of hack is in that contract - lawyers from EFF will have a fields day with this in court!)

In the end TiVO was nice enough to let people who figure out their little toy play with it as much as they wanted, as long as they realized the warranty was gone at that point...

This seems like a similar debate... actually it's more like Cell Phones... you can buy one, then pay some guy in Europe to unlock it from the carrier. Is it legal, well depends on who you ask - just because you sign a document may NOT obligate you to every point... There are plenty of contracts drawn which are non-enforceable because legally they CAN not be enforceable. I have no opinion on this one, but for any who simply say - you signed it, live with it - you are mistaken. Lawyers would not be needed if it was that simple.

If you have a grievance, then by all means talk to lawyer about resolving it legally if the other party won't give you the time of day.

And it looks like someone is already suing Vonage over this issue...

Thing to remember is that even if this lawsuit is settled, Vonage will not OPEN up their routers, but simply be ordered to buy the guy an unlocked version of the device - and I suspect he will never use Vonage again...

Exactly...I have seen the same thing on dslreports...When you buy this RT3 you are buying just that...A router WITH the voice capabilities that works with Vonage, or one that works with CV etc...The router still works, it's just you have to subscribe to the Vonage service...so to me it is a case of buyer beware...do your homework ahead of time, know your products etc...
But don't come back and then threaten to sue, etc...If you are not an informed buyer, then that is your fault.

I bought my Linksys Router/TA. I paid for it. I bought it at CompUSA. I did not buy it from Vonage. There is absolutely NO reason why Vonage should hold the password that prevents me from using my router's second port for ANY OTHER PROVIDER. As an example, I also have service from AT&T Callvantage. I own the router, I want to configure my second SIP port. Vonage, a THIRD PARTY will not give me the password TO MY OWN ROUTER.

As it happens, I write firmware for communications devices. If need be, I will reverse engineer the device to get the password. It is a matter of principle now.

If the password is not forthcoming on this forum, then I will have no choice but to reverse engineer the device - which by the way is EXTREMELY LEGAL - I have signed nothing agreeing to not do that. Once I have had to spend my time to do this, I will post the password ALL OVER THE INTERNET.
