The short answer is that you can't get access to these settings.
Vonage
holds them near and dear to their corporate heart. As a matter of fact, if you cancel your service, they send a packet to the router which permanently locks the voice ports so they can not be used later.
Nice, huh?
I've already contacted their administration and have looked quite seriously into pursuing legal action since their business practices seem more than just a little bit unscrupulous.
Would you be interested in contacting their legal representatives as well? I should be hearing back shortly with a name and hopefully address/telephone number of the right people to talk to.

Post subject: more help please
Thank you for your post that the voltage can be set only at 70 or 90 and that 45 is not an option.
It is a bit confusing for some.
The standards include two voltages. One voltage is for the ringer, which is the 70/90 volts that you mentioned.
The other voltage is the actual voice and dial tone voltage. The standard is 48 to 50 volts.
The Linksys is only putting out 45 volts for dial tone. My pbx does not see the phone line at all because the dial tone voltage is too low.
How can I get a
Vonage
rep to access my router and change the setting from 45 volts to the industry standared of 50 volts?

Post subject: You signed a contract
jzacuto, I'll use your own example of buying a car and then being forced to go to the manufacturer every time you needed new tires. If you purchased that car AND SIGNED A CONTRACT that you would only buy tires from the manufacturer, then that is what you must do. Otherwise you breech the contract and can be sued. When you click the "I Agree" button, you are signing a contract and are legally obligated to abide by Vonage's Terms of Service.

That would be fine, however that's not the contract I agreed to with
Vonage
. Their stipulation is that I won't hack their system. I don't plan to hack their system. I want to use my router as it was designed to be used: As a two port voice over IP router.
Plain, simple, no hacking. I don't know what else to say.

This is an interesting debate, and one that I'm sure schmucks like the ACLU would like to get involved in... For some reason we here in America think that we have the RIGHT to do whatever we want, because we want to do it... This is incorrect thinking... You may not want this password to be malicious, or hack further into the system, but the fact remains that given that password, you can and will have access to do exactly that... If history has told us anything it is that humans are a curious race, given the opportunity to do something, they will generally do it whether or not they planned to do it in the first place... Basically
Vonage
, and EVERY other ISP /
Voip
company are guaranteeing that their service won't be tampered with by not allowing access to this area of the router which under their TOS is completely legal. Another issue with letting every Tom, Dick, Harry, and "I'm an engineer from MIT" type have access is that inevitably they screw something up and have to call customer service / Tech support for help... This causes more issues because each call costs money, takes a reps time who should be helping customers who have issues not created by themselves, and in some cases costs more time and money for shipping new hardware.... These are simple common sense issues that most everyone can understand and abide by... If you don't like the TOS that you yourself agreed to, go elsewhere, but don't bog down the legal system, and cost me tax dollars to get into a pissing contest over a contract that you yourself have agreed to...

I do agree to the terms of service that I agreed to. However, this subject is not fully addressed in the TOS and, therefore, getting the password and having access to the second voice port is none of Vonage's business.
I own the router. Period. End of story. It's mine. Not theirs.

I usually side with the consumers with issues like this. But this is not a "consumer" issue. I usually dislike corporations, but so far
Vonage
does not behave like an uncontrolled one and is on OUR side when it comes to features and price. So as long as this continues, I will side with
Vonage
.

Gee. I hope someone's there to side with you when car companies start locking consumers out of the trunk when they need the spare tires.
