PostPosted: Tue Apr 19, 2005 6:30 pm    Post subject: Wiring and Verizon Plan Questions Reply with quote Back to top

I've been hearing a lot of hype about Vonage lately, and i feel i'm ready to make the switch.

I have no desire of keeping my verizon telephone number, so I'm wondering if Vonage will cancel my current plan with Verizon and i can start with them or not?

Also, we use 1 telephone (a cordless) in my house which is downstairs, my internet is upstairs in my office, how will this effect anything? Does that mean i have to keep my phone up in my office now?

Thank you so much in advance

If you have no desire to keep your Verizon number, Vonage will issue you a number depending on your physical location. You can request a chicago, new york or california number. Hopefully you can even request a "local" number so that when people call you it is a local call. If for instance you had a lot of callers in one city and you live in another city you could request and additional virtual number that would be local to those callers.
Vonage can not cancel your verizon service, you as the bill payer must do that.
You could get a dual wireless phone lilke motorola or vtech that has an extra charger and leave that downstairs. Your main phone will need to be by the computer connecton however. Unless you plug into the "house" wiring in which case all the phone jacks will become Vonage lines.
Hope this helps a bit.

is plugging into the house wire legal? would that be something i could do or would i need a professional?

It sounds like a really good plan, its just the few complaints have spooked me.

i.e. customer service and weird errors i dont understand.

I dislike Verizon strongly as their customer service was the reason i canceled my DSL

You MUST keep Verizon active sduring the number transfer. Once it completed we automatically cancel Verizon for you.

if it's your house than it's your wiring.

If you have DSL you should make sure that "naked" DSL is offered by verizon. If You cut off your Phone line dsl may not still be available to you.

Easy, just drop Verizon off the network interface and plug the output of your Vonage modem into the nearest phone jack. It will "energize" yoiur whole hosue so that all jacks become Vonage jacks.

And yes, your house and thus your wires.

I don't think Verizon offers Naked DSL. They recently announced they will be offering that service in the northeast, but the article I read didn't say when or more precisely which states.
