PostPosted: Mon Apr 18, 2005 5:17 pm    Post subject: how do I get SIP INFO DTMF from Vonage? Reply with quote Back to top

Hello,
I am using a Vonage Business Account quite happily for a new phone system and was wondering if it is possible for me to get SIP INFO from Vonage instead of RFC 2833 (RTP EV). Anyone know how I do this. I create my own SDP for registration so this shouldn't be that hard. From what I have read Cisco gear supports SUBSCRIBE/NOTIFY which I guess I could do also, but my application is written for SIP INFO. Any info (pardon my pun) would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
D

The attribute (a=) in my SDP if I specify it this way. Or do I need to do something else. Currently I can get RFC 2833 if I use
a=rtpmap:101 telephone-event/8000

Is there a way I can specify SIP INFO like this? Or do I need to do something else. Basically, does Vonage support SIP INFO DTMF and how do I get it to work (on a quite detailed SIP level)? I am using MS RTC Client 1.2 which is the component all the microsoft communications stuff is built on.

Thanks,
-D

I doubt you can do what you want. I am not aware of any payload encoding that you can use to specify DTMF via SIP INFO, and the PSTN gateways that Vonage uses do not support SIP INFO anyways. But I am wondering why you want to do that -- does your client software restrict you to getting DTMF only via SIP INFO for some reason? RFC 2833 is widely supported as the way to transmit DTMF as telephony events.

Im not a SIP programmer, but I can tell you what I know from what i've learned along the way. the SIP INFO for DTMF signalling is the DTMF relay MIME type. This is the MIME Type to be used in a SIP INFO message used to signal DTMF event.

As far as implementing, your on your own for that stuff, heh.

for the SDP, theres a few (a=) but I cant remember any which signal DTMF

Yes, my platform does restrict me, sadly. I am using Brooktrout TR2020 boards for Media Packetization (their term not mine) which we all know as RTP. Sadly, this board does NOT support 2833 (to my dismay) so I am stuck with SIP INFO. I have used it before, at other providers with this same setup, but usually it is a change they make on their side, not one that is negitiated in SDP.

From what I can gather from my own work with Vonage, they seem to be using Cisco gateways so I know these accept SIP INFO DTMF like so:

application/dtmf-relay

Signal=9
Duration=250

But from what I have read, to receive DTMF I must use SUBSCRIBE/NOTIFY. Sadly I am not sure if MS RTC Client supports this, or if it does I do not know how to send a SUBSCRIBE message. Guess I will do more digging.
Thanks
