My internet access is through an authenticating HTTP Proxy (Microsoft Proxy Server) to be specific.

When I connect with my PC, the network connection is set to receive the DHCP IP address handed out to it. Each application usually has to have the proxy address and username and password entered as well (my browser for instance).

So, how do I go about setting up the RT31P2 and the Vonage service? I have been able to connect to the router's web interface through the browser by disabling the proxy address in the browser. I set the RT31P2 to DHCP mode so that it will hand out addresses. However, with the PC plugged into the adapter, I get no web connection at all whether I use the proxy settings or not.

This is in addition to the phone which is plugged into the adapter not having any dialtone nor any activity on the phone LED on the front of the adapter, though the Internet light flashes as though it is sending and receiving traffic.

Anyone have any ideas?

P.S. I have to switch the cables back and forth to test and post, so it may take a few minutes for me to check back here and such after trying something.

*edit* I may be able to get the network admin to setup a static IP on the web just for this router. I assume this would eliminate all of my issues, but I still wonder if it could work in my current environment.

If I understand you correctly, your ISP requires PPPoE access as the Internet Connection Type. Is that correct? Who is your ISP and how are you setup?

Didn't you receive a "Quick Installation" pamplet and an "Installation and Troubleshooting Guide with your RT31P2. If not you can find a copies of the User Manual and Quick Guide in .PDF format at:

When you open the Web-Based Utility at The User Name is "admin" and the password is "admin". Change the password later. The default page will show " The Internet Connection Type default as "Obtain an IP Automatically" you will need to click the pulldown menu and select "PPPoE". Now enter the Username and Password that you have been supplied with by your ISP. If provided by your ISP, enter the "Service Name"

Connect on demand and Max Idle times you can set as it suits you. I would suggest that you enter "0" in the Max Idle Time field to allow you to remain online all the time. Otherwise enter the number of minutes until the Internet access disconnects.

Set your "Local DHCP Server" to "enable". At the bottom of the page set your time. At the top click "Status" then "router". The current versions of Firmware and Voice are displayed as well as your Internet IP Address. Your RT31P2 will always be addressed by the Internet IP address that your ISP has assigned you, and you will always repond to the Internet with that address. The RT31P2 will assign LAN IP addresses to your systems that are plugged into any one of the three Ethernet ports on the rear of the router with addresses between the range through If you need them you can go as high as

Finally, click the black "Administration" field and type in a new password. You're all done. Most people never need more than the default settings. If you plan to run games online there will be some ports to be enabled.

I hope I haven't gone overboard and given you more information than you asked for. You were non-specific so you got the whole thing. Good luck.

ISP: Comcast
Setup: Motorola SB5100 to RT31P2 to Local Machines

Thanks for the help.

My internet connection is a bit unknown as I am a faculty member living on campus. So, there is a big fiber line coming to the school.

I connect through the LAN which I have to log on to the domain to connect to. For nearly every application that uses HTTP, I have to input a user/pass combo and a proxy address. I also have a Microsoft Firewall Client installed that routes all other kinds of connections.

I think that may be the key: there is a firewall at the head of everything. I am about to go talk to my network admin (he lives downstairs) to see what can be done.

Thanks again for your time.

*UPDATE* Either the network admin got tired of me bothering him, or he just couldn't figure out. At any rate, I now have a direct connection without any proxy gibberish in the way. I made my first call and though there were some rough patches in the quality, it works. I'll give it a month and see what happens. Thanks again for your time, Mike!
