I use a Linksys - had mostly good service from it. It has the latest BIOS which helps. I also use a SMC Barricade (paraniod abour security).

The Barricade is a much better router, more robust and secure, but I like the logging on the Linksys much much better.

I think I have an answer. When you’re using the phone, go to the switch and unplug the kids. That will limit there bandwidth for sure Lol . There could be a few repercussions, but I think it would do the trick.

The $60 Sollution

There is a great working solution for that problem going a little different route. It's a script called wondershaper (http://lartc.org/wondershaper/) which runs on top of a Linux kernel > V2.4. The results are excellent! And very easy to install:

- Get an old box from ebay. P1 or P2 with 100MB Ram and some old HD: $30
- 2 NIC: $10
- 1 Hub or switch: $20
- Some “of the shelf” firewall/router solution. : FREE
(I am using Clark Connect http://www.clarkconnect.org. Great!)
- Wondershaper: FREE
- The patience to read a manual: FREE

With a little luck, the whole thing (Kazaa et al. ) is solved on a Sunday afternoon.

It works for me.

netlimiter v0.91 beta3 is a good software choice for the "kids" pc. just set the limits of the up/down load speed and dont worry what they are doing.

Is anybody following the relationship betweene the Cisco ATA188 and Vonage? Just before i signed up I asked if the ATA188 was compatable with Vonage service and I was sad to hear that it isant. The ATA188 is the big brother of the ATA186. The nice thing about the ATA188 is it has an extra eithernet port on it. The extra port is switched and intended to feed-through the broadband connection to a local computer. The packets from the computer port are throttled so that they dont interfer with the realtime data flow from the ATA.

This might solve the problem?

So how do we get Vonage off there kester to work the ATA188 in to the program?

I am also an avid user of FreeBSD. I don't think I could manage with out it.

I have setup ipfw rules before and I vaguely understand how to setup dummynet to just limit bandwidth. I can't figure out how to make it dynamic, so that when Voip traffic exists, bandwidth elsewhere is restricted.

I did confer with someone on the FreeBSD mailing list, although he said it could be done, he couldn't explain how.

Any ideas? Have you set this up on your network?

...Thanks...

question - i currently have a sonicwall b/c i want the stateful inspection, and i do have issues with my Vonage when all my roomates are downloading at the same time. i am doing all port forwarding to the ata. If i use the linksys befsr81 witht he QOS, can i still keep it behind the sonicwall, or would that defeat the whole QOS capability?

I've heard other people who have set up QOS on their routers have had better luck with Vonage. I'm using a Cisco 806 as a border router and I was just wondering if there's a tutorial somewhere or an easy way to set that up. The main thing I'm worried about is limiting my OUTGOING bandwidth so that there's enough allocated for Vonage.

Any help greatly appreciated

Did you ever get your QoS configured on your Cisco 806? I need to do the same...

Unfortunately the routers at the telco and ISP are not configured to give priority to incoming Voip packets, so downloads can always be problematic.
