I tried it, not thinking it would work. Everywhere I read, it seemed that you had to have NAT or DHCP, and several people had posted workarounds about "virtual static IPs" via limiting DHCP to one address.
But the VT1005 allows you to assign a static IP, which I did. Works great. Makes administering the network quite a bit easier. |

Maybe this is totally old news, but my guess is that this capability is brand new - so new that Vonage's website still says in it's Requirements FAQ:
I already have a network in my home. Will I be able to subscribe to your service and use my existing networking equipment?
Vonage will integrate with most networks very easily as long as the network supports NAT (Network Address Translation) and DHCP. NAT is the translation of an Internet Protocol address used within one network to a different IP address known within another network. Vonage service requires a dynamically assigned IP address.
This statement was obviously true at one point, as also evidenced by the plethora of posts on how to trick DHCP into using one and only one IP - thereby turning DHCP into a virtual Static IP.
I just thought this was news enough to pass along to the next guy doing a search similar to the one I had done a week ago... |

This information has been inaccurate ever since Vonage started shipping the Motorola ATA's and, to be honest, the Cisco 186's had the ability to assign static IP's as well. I have no idea why Vonage hasn't changed their web site. Even if you call customer support, they will tell you they support static IP's. |
