Maybe, maybe not. If they start assessing $1000 - $5000 penalties daily for every customer in IL; I don't think it would take Vonage long to pull the plug. While I would like to see them implement some type of "real" 911 service, I think the short time frame demands (especially Canada) are unrealistic.

We can hope that this will put the pressure on the traditional phone companies and the Voip providers to play nice with each other, under the supervision of either the FCC or the courts.

Vonage could do what some insurance company's have done..
Leave the state if they do not get what they want.

In short, sorry Illinois, we no longer offer service to people with the State of Illinois mailing address. The state would have little if any control then.

They could easily do that in a sparsely populated state or one with a generally technophobic population, but Illinois has lots & lots of phones and more than a few technophiles.

I don't live in Illinois but I don't see this as a big deal. We already know they intend to provide e911 service later this year. If Sept 1st isn't sufficient time, they will just get the 1-year extension the articles state. If the landline companies are not cooperating, I don't see any reason why an extension won't be granted.

In Canada, the short timeframes only apply to static Voip products. Portable ones, like Vonage, are not bound by the rules. Cable company offerings are expected to be fixed-location Voip products and will be bound by the rules.
