Ok, I've had it.

I've been with Vonage for about a year now. I've got a Motorola terminal adaptor.

Just two days ago, my internet started slowing down horribly. Strangely, it worked fine when I removed the Vonage terminal adaptor.

Just got done talking to tech support in India. HORRIBLE.

She told me that I needed to go into my properties for my network adaptor and take my link speed down to 10 mb/s??!? What in the world? Do they just make this stuff up?

Of course, it didn't help a thing, and now she's telling me I can't run my network at 100mb/s like I have been for 8 months.

First, I guess, does anyone have any insight into this problem? Has Vonage updated firmware on the Motorola TA's recently that may have caused a problem like this?

Second.. What in the world is going on with Vonage tech support? This was totally by-the-script and completely useless.

Oh, this is great.

Speed test (with Vonage MTA):

Download: 359 kbps
Upload: 325 kbps
QOS: 4%
Round Trip Time: 60ms
Max Pause: 1719ms

Without MTA connected:

Download: 3718 kbps
Upload: 329 kbps
QOS: 96%
RTT: 60ms
Max Pause: 22ms

Hmm.. Any insight?

Cox cable, supposed to be 4mb down 384k up.

It definitely feels like dialup when the Vonage router is connected now.

Keep in mind that this has been working fine for 6 months.. I just came home one evening and this was happening...

I would use a couple different speed tests to confirm, especially with the mta off. if your isp has a speed test page, that would be good, and also uploading a file to your isp's web space (if they offer that) is a good measure of local upload speed. even with the router off, your connection is very slow and nowhere near 4/384.

Hm?

Maybe I didn't post that right..

Without MTA connected:

Download: 3718 kbps (3.718 mbps, sorry)..
Upload: 329 kbps

That's pretty close to 4/384.. The connection seems fine with the MTA disconnected.

ok, heh, besides the error in editing, you're editing what is presented on the page and everyone else posts with. one gets used to seeing the same thing over and over and I didn't expect it to be edited for...whatever reason you had.
at any rate, it is odd, and only download seems to be affected. nothing has been posted here about mta changes, but I don't think the majority of people here have mta's either. besides a standard reset, I'm not sure what else to tell you. have you looked around for anything odd in the mta's web interface?

Sorry about that.. Got annoyed with my cut and paste not working correctly for some reason and I just typed it in. Wink

Anyways, the motorola web interface is horribly sparse.. Port forwarding and IP settings only, really..

This is a curious symptom, however -- when I put my PC in the "DMZ" on the mta web config, NOTHING gets through.. I can -ping-, but no TCP traffic gets out! (I.E. I can ping my server at work, but can't telnet into it!)

Looks like when DMZ is on, ICMP traffic gets out (ping), but not TCP/UDP!

This is sounding like a MTA problem.. unfortunately it looks like this motorola POS has no factory reset setting or anything.. arrgh... unless anyone can enlighten me?

well I can tell you that the moto is a weak "router" at best, and if you have a real router you can use (and plug your computers and mta into the real router) it seems to preform much better based on posts I've seen.

Agreed, I'm getting ready to throw this out the window.. Would anyone be able suggest a good replacement -- and can I just pick up another one at Office Depot or best buy without having to jump through hoops to get Vonage to switch it over??

(Is it as simple as buying a new cable modem -- buy a new Voip router, and call up and give them the new MAC address?)

Thanks!
