Hola:
Tel Mex has blocked some, not all, of Vonage customers in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. My neighborhood has been targeted. No one seems to know what the problem is. Can you give me and my computer guy any help?
We used Vonage for 2 years and loved it. Tel Mex is starting it's own international calling, which used to cost USD$1.00 per minute, and a service similar to Vonage...www.voxip.com.mx/. I know this is a third world country, but Vonage has a lot of customers living here.
Thanks for anything you can do to help us out down here. jmsutter |

I've got a virtual number in Mexico City with Vonage and only once had a brief problem due to a lightening storm. Reports of problems with Telmex filtering Voip is all anecdotal. I've never had the problem. By the way, in the original post, there was a mention that Telmex is getting into the Voip business with "www.voxip.com.mx". That company belongs to IUSACEL which is a cell phone company and a competitor of Telmex's cell company: "Telcel". There are a number of local phone companies now in Mexico although Telmex still has the lion's share of the market and the long distance market is shared by a great number of competitors including affiliates of AT&T & MCI. There are also a few Voip startups but at prices out of this world compared to Vonage and others. |

Agreed, it seems that Vonage doesn't want anything to do with it, or even attempt to make some kind of deal. You can't just take, sometimes you have to give too. But what can you expect from another company outsourcing their customer service. Hey maybe they'll outsource to Mexico one day. |

To play Devil's Advocate for just a moment here - sometimes it actually costs a lot more money than it's really worth to establish a presence in a country with a monopoly on public services. How about Germany? They're a large, wealthy nation with broadband. The problem is the legal battle just isn't worth it alone. Now, if the legal battle is already going on (and well publicized) I'm sure Vonage would jump on the bandwagon and help in the fight to be able to provide service.
Now, that being said, have you tried changing the ports that you use to send/receive calls (currently 5060/5061) to something in the RTP range - 10000 to around 20000? As long as you can get Real Player broadcasts, you'd be able to get phone calls. |

They might be blocking it at the IP address rather than port #. |
