I have tested connecting a phone directly to the Linksys PAP2 adaptor and it works fine. I followed threads about disconnecting telco service at NIU (unplugged two-I have two phone lines-short black wires with standard phone jack on end) and all phones were dead. I then plugged adaptor into wall jack and I got no dial tone. I tried several other jacks that I know are working and still didn't get any dial tone. Any idea what the problem might be?

Try twisting the wires together where you disconnected them. I had to twist mine to get all my jacks functioning. Since then, I lost my Vonage using my existing phone lines in the house, so I bought a new phone. Uniden at Costco. 1 main base with phone and 3 more extension phones for 99.00. I have my main phone running directly from the PAP2.

Single Point of Failure. PAP2 or Phone if I have Internet.

Thanks for the reply. When you say twist the wires together where you disconnected, do you mean the two heavier black wires with the phone plugs on the end? Kind of hard to do. Or do you mean the colored wires? Sorry to sound so dumb about this stuff Rolling Eyes

The thick black wires I would assume are grounds. You want to try twisting the colored wires.
red to red, green to green.
I left my Black wires connected to the posts, if this is what your talking about.

If your cable to the wall is not correctly pinned you can reverse polarity on the circuit. An inexpensive tester http://www.radioshack.com/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=CTLG&product%5Fid=43-2225 will show you what is going on. Reverse one end of the cable (requires a new connector) to correct reversed polarity.

SJanas0993,

Since you had 2 phone lines coming into your house, your phone jacks will have up to 2 circuits. Imagine your house has two loops of wires going to the various jacks. One of the loops is for your first phone line and the second loop is for your second phone line.

If some of your phones were only connected to the first phone line and you connect your Vonage router into one of those jacks, then only the phones that have access to the first phone line will work.

If some of your phones were only connected to the 2nd phone line, and you connect your Vonage router into one those that used the 2nd line, then only the phones that have access to the second line will work.

You might want to try this to make sure that your loops are all still connected and working properly.

In other words, just plugging the Vonage router into any jack will not result in all the phone working since you have two separate loops going in your house. There are several fixes. One of which is to make all the jacks connect only to one loops. If you unscrew the jacks, there should be several colored pairs of wires (typically 3 in older homes, in new homes 4 pairs). If your home is an older home, it will have one pair of green/red and a second pair of black/yellow. If your home is a newer home, it might have a solid blue/blue with white stripes and a second pair of solid orange/orange with white stripes, etc.

If you want all the phones in your home to work off the Vonage line, you want to connect all the phone jacks to the same pair either green/red or black/yellow. It doesn't matter which pair so long as all the jacks have the same pair. Make sure to attach them to the same location in the jack screws. Do this also for the jack that your Vonage router will be connected to. Once you do this, all the phones should work off of the Vonage phone line.

If this is too technical or complicated, you can always take the easier but more costly route, which is to get a wireless base phone system with several hand units that work off of it.

But it will cost you, Mundy5.

I hope this helps.
