Is 10BaseT fast enough to handle Voip?

Plenty fast. Are you connected via 10BaseT?

Try the VoIP Speed Test

Well, When I find out if my Motorola SurfBoard is !0 or 100 I will know for sure. I have just replaced my old 2wire HomePortal model 100 with the RT31P2. The HomePortal was 10BaseT on both the WAN and local network side. The RT31P2 is 10/100 on the Local Network side but I am not sure what the SB4100 is feeding the Wan Link.

I have another post about Stealth of the RT31P2 but it tests out well on grc.com ShieldsUp I will have to look at the AuditMyPC.com site again and see if it is just trying to scare me into purchasing something.

Thanks for your reply.
David

It depends on how much traffic is on your network. 10BaseT is usually half duplex and collisions can slow the effective throughput down to a fraction of 10 Mbps if there is a lot of traffic. However, you only need 90kbps so it would be highly unlikely that you'd have a problem.

It sounds like you may be confusing port speed on your equipment with actual speeds you receive from your ISP.
Are you using cable or DSL?
Your rated speed from your ISP is what you need to consider when evaluating your Voip capability.
Try www.bandwidthplace.com for a free speed test. Anything over 90 KBps is adequate for Voip. If you use Internet concurrently, you'll want to make sure you have reserve bandwidth to maintain call quality when you are browsing.

Haven't had any problems with RT31P2 connected with SB4100 so far.

Bottom line is no cable modem connection is 10MB/sec. You do not even need 1MB/sec for Vonage to work.
