I just purchased a PAP2 yesterday and did the retail activation. I currently dont have a router so I simply unplugged my computer and decided to try it with just the cable modem and the PAP2. Everything is plugged in correctly as shown in the diagrams.

I can hear a dialtone but when I dial any number nothing happens. I am unable to make or receive calls. It just has 'dead air' after dialing a number. The power LED is lit along with the ethernet LED which has a constant fast flickering. The phone LED is not lit or flashing.

I have power cycled both the PAP2 and my cable modem countless times and verified that all the wires were plugged in securely. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't mean to insult your intelligence in any way because you said that you did power cycle your modem and ATA. But did you boot the modem first until all lights are completely steady, then plug in your ATA AFTER that occured? I'm just trying to rule out the fact that the cable modem might be assigning the ATA a private IP address if the synch is not complete.

Ok, then clearly something else is wrong. The line 1 light should be solid on the ATA in order for you to get a dial tone. It's very strange that it isn't, yet you got a dial tone. At least with my PAP2, if the line 1 light isn't solid I don't get a dial tone at all. You may want to contact Vonage tech support for help.

PAP2 cannot be plugged into a cable modem. It is not getting a the proper IP address. Plug a router into your cable modem and plug the PAP2 into that and it will work

I just went out and bought a Hawking 5 port 10/100 switch and plugged everything together according to the Vonage diagrams. Same problem! Computer works perfect, phone has dialtone but is unable to make calls.

Does it have to be a router or can it be a switch?
