Post subject: losing a channel
Something strange is happenning on my ATA as well as my friend's down the street. What's happening is on either dialed or received calls to/from regular analog callers (not between ourselves which we haven't tested), we will occasionally (maybe 1 out of 20 calls) lose one of the receive or transmit channels.
In other words, in the middle of conversations sometimes they can hear me, but I can't hear them, or sometimes I can hear them and they can't hear me. It never happens both ways where we both can't hear each other. Nor does the problem ever resolve itself in time. We have to hang up and call right back.
My friend and I are both using the same service provider (Cox cable) and the same brand (but not model) of router. He's using a Linksys 5-port wireless and I've got a Linksys wired single port.
Is it the router? the service? the ATA?
Thanks for any help

What type of cable modem do you have? There are certain cable modems that have been linked to this kind of problem. I'm not sure if it's entirely the modems fault, but the wrong modem can enhance the problem. I believe it is RCA modems that are the "bad guys".
FWIW - I don't have the RCA modem, but I occasionally experience this problem (maybe 1 out of 100 calls).
Check out this thread that covers this probem pretty well:
