I received my confirmation e-mail today that my Vonage 911 was wet up. So I decided to test it to see where it went and what information they had for me.

Well...when someone answered the phone after 15 or so rings, "Back Office." It didn't hime me what the guy said. I told him I'm a Broadband Phone user and I'm testing my 911 service. The guy said, "Well, it's not working because you reached the back office of the police department. These phones are typically not monitored...I just happened to be back here."

My Point...TEST YOUR 911 NO MATTER WHAT WHEN YOU GET IT. You don't want to find out when you're having a heart attack that you called the back office of a police station.

I did it yesterday and I got our city's NON emergency number. She said that it would be answered after all 911 calls are answered.

If they can route you to the police station why can't they route the number to 911?

all Vonage 911 calls (are supposed to) go to a non-emergency number, or psap.
in a lot of places, the police station is the 911 call center also. this seems to be a case of an incorrect psap number. but since it goes to the police station, you may have a more difficult time getting Vonage to correct it. DetHkyTwn should have asked for the correct psap number. then you program that number into your phones as a better option if you ever needed to call it. or paste it somewhere on the phone (back of handset, etc.)
LMari - I think you understand, but just in case, it sounds like your call went to the right place.

Wow- so I just moved from Salinas, CA to Hollister, CA and after reading this thread I realized that I had not yet tested a 911 call to my PSAP.

In Salinas, my call was routed to the highway patrol dispatch center. When I called, the lady sounded confused as to why I'd be calling.

Here in Hollister when I called, to my suprise, a nice lady answered "San Benito County Emergency, please state your emergency."

I'm surprised and actually pretty darn happy that it seems this area has gotten lucky with the PSAP number our calls are routed to.

I've been meaning to test this, myself, but kept forgetting. While reading this thread, I picked up the phone, and did so. I was very pleasantly surprised when my call was answered "911 emergency dispatch, how may I help you?." I explained why I was calling, and she said that I did reach the correct place, that my number was showing up, and that I should have no problems should I need emergency assistance.

I guess it does work in some places.

care to share where you're located?
sounds like they have caller id on the line, which is different from ANI (and ALI for that matter) features of E911. especially since only your number was showing. unless you just left out the part where she said your address also came up.

Funny, it was there before, I had looked at it wondering where he was from before you posted.

No, no inside info on this, but I will ask.

Yes, as Dan said, I'm in Washington, DC (sorry, Reebok, but my location has been there for weeks). Actually, it didn't occur to me to ask if she could determine my address until I'd already hung up; but, I'm just thrilled to know that the call actually goes to emergency dispatch, because I didn't expect that, at all.
