PostPosted: Sat Apr 23, 2005 9:23 pm    Post subject: Same problem - some calls lose one-way audio after a few min Reply with quote Back to top

I'm having a similar problem with a Motorola VT1005v adaptor. On some calls, several minutes in to the call (variable - 10? 20? 30?), one direction stops working - either I can hear them and they can no longer hear me, or they can hear me and I can no longer hear them. Actually, I know it's happened where I can't hear them and they can still hear me; I'm not sure if the other way has happened to me. It does not come back on the same call. Hanging up and redialing always fixes it.

I have 1.5Mb/400Kb DSL through Speakeasy. I have 10 static IP addresses. PING tracking on my DSL connection shows < 1% packet loss on a long term basis.

My setup is like this:

DSL line -> BroadXent DSL bridge -> hub

(real honest to goodness 10Mb ethernet hub, not switch, not NAT, no intelligence - just a pure 10Mb repeater hub)

Plugged in to the hub are the WAN port of the Motorola VT1005v and two ethernet ports on my Linux firewall (one as the uplink, the other to sniff passively).

Yes, large downloads do cause choppy voice. Yes, I know how to put the VT1005v in pure bridge mode where it only snags packets sent to its own IP address - I may play with that again later.

I've seen several other posts describing the "calls switch to just one-way audio a few minutes in", and I've seen it reported with two or three adaptor types (Motorola VT1005v, Linksys, and the RT product mentioned in this thread - or is that the Linksys?).

I'd really like Vonage to fix its customer service and also fix this one-way voice problem.

I started to experience this problem this morning. Service has been OK for the last two months when I signed up.
The problem is when I get phone calls from Mexico, someone knows if they are blocking something there?
What should I do?

That should have very little to do with them. Your Mexico City virtual number is not in Mexico, it is very much in the USA.

What happens when you call the virtual number?

I'd also like to know how to fix this - I'm on the verge of cancelling Vonage today because I don't see the service as being reliable.

I'd love to say $50/month, but not if I'm always worrying if my phone is going to cut out.

What would be really helpful to me would be to hear what worked to get rid of "audio dropping out" problems.

Just started for me today. Call someone and noone can hear anything. Then I get a call (while at work) from another Vonage customer in Takoma, WA.

Vonage is really screwed up at the moment.

Muting and sniped dialing!!!

Just wanted to get back with y'all - Problem solved (for me, at least)!

My problem was a router problem... by watching the lights on my router, I saw that they would go off for a second or two, take 5-7 seconds to reset, and during that time my audio was off. (it took me a while to notice, because I use a cordless phone)

I took my D-Link back and got a Linksys WRT54G, hooked it up, and it has solid ever since. No problems with Vonage whatsoever.

So here's what I started with:
Comcast :: Toshiba pcx1100 :: D-Link DI-624 :: PAP2
and now,
Comcast :: Motorola SB5100 :: Linksys WRT54G :: PAP2

Solid as a rock.

Thanks to all who helped,
binkyjoe
