I'm hoping you guys can help me set up my dual router configuration. I've been all over these forums, trying out everything I find. Most recently, I tried out the settings posted by GrandAmGuru in this thread. It worked fine in the sense that I could both access the Internet through the WRT and that I had a dial tone, and I was satisfied - until people started calling me on my cell phone and telling me that my Vonage number was not ringing and was just kicking right to voice mail. I couldn't find anything about that particular problem on the boards, and nothing I did seemed to fix it, so for the moment all my computers are back on the RT for Internet access and the WRT isn't being used. Any suggestions would be great.

thanks in advance, this board has been a wonderful resource so far.

just put the rt in the dmz of the wrt and see if it works. if it does, you can either leave it alone or change to forwarding ports.
you should post your full network config.
also, I'm assuming that your phone works like it should when the wrt is out of the picture right?

I can tell you how I have my wrt54g and rt31p2 hooked up. The wrt54g is hooked to the cable modem and the rt31p2 is hooked to the wrt54g. I changed the local ip address on the rt to 192.168.1.2 so it is on same subnet as wrt54g (192.168.1.1) Set the rt for static ip adress 192.168.1.10, leave subnet alone and set gateway to address of wrt54g (192.168.1.1)and turn off dhcp on the rt also. type ipconfig from dos prompt on your computer and see what dns servers are, put these in rt where it asks for dns entries. run 1 ethernet cable from wrt54g to Internet port on rt and then run another cable from any lan port on the wrt54g to any lan port on the rt.

I managed to completely forget that I posted here, good for me!

reebok, my phone does work just fine once the WRT is gone, which is why everything is running through the RT right now. As for network configuration, to be honest I'm not sure how to answer that question - right now everything is on default settings since I was so frustrated after the configuration I linked to didn't work and just reset both the routers, and I haven't tried to do anything since then. You may have to hold my hand on this as I'm a relative newbie to doing a lot of complicated network stuff. Sad

newmex, I tried that configuration too and I still experience the problem of the phone working but ringing straight through to voicemail. It doesn't like the dual-router configuration, for some reason...

edit for update: Just tried putting the RT in the DMZ of the WRT and am experiencing exactly the same problem. It's like the phone is reading as being off the hook. For a little additional information, I tried going through the dashboard at Vonage and disabling voicemail; when I do that and then call my phone, I get a message that says "That number is not currently available."

second edit!: still trying the DMZ, I just found out that if I take the phone off the hook I lose all Internet connectivity and can't even get into the WRT setup (192.168.1.1).

AspectTec, where might I find a shorted RJ-11 like you have in your setup, or how can I make one myself?

You need an uncrimped rj-11 and a piece of normal phone type wire.

You just have to place the loop in the 2 center grooves and then crimp it down.

Find a telecom person you know and ask him to do it for you if you can.

It doesn't seem to matter - as soon as a second router is introduced, no matter how many different ways I try the configuration - and I have been exactly copying the functional configurations of many, many people on the board - I stop being able to receive incoming calls. I'm running out of ideas and growing increasingly frustrated here. :/
