my mom and I have been trying to figure out this phone service since about july and it's so frusterating. At first if you go on her computer and do some internet activity the phone service and internet would go off and we'd have to take the power cord off the router for 30sec's and then back in and rinse&repeat whenever this would happen. I'm studying networking currently in school, yet never heard of this kind of phone service, nor have a idea how this is set up to get it to work correctly. If some could please tell me how they have their's setup starting from the phone outlet to the end that'd be a great help.
what my i have for my network: netgear wireless wgr614 toshiba PCX1100 cable modem 2 computers (both wireless)
i believe thats all you might need to know not too sure lol, but if you need more info on what i got in my LAN ask away as long as this problem we have gets fixed.
thanx in advanced, kris |

This sounds like more of a router prob than a Vonage prob. If you're losing your net, of course the phones would die. If resetting the router is what fixes it, then you got a router prob.
With the info posted here, I suggest checking for a firmware update for your router. Then check all settings for NAT on the router. Try and set up forwarded ports as described in several threads here.
I went through the same tyoe of issues with mine a while back (on a D-Link DI-614+ revA) and after a couple firmware updates and tweaking settings in the router, all is well. It was never a Vonage problem for me, it was a router config problem and I would wager you're in the same boat.

Kris, I have experienced a similar problem with my setup. The only hardware difference is that I have a NetGear wired router rather than a wireless. I, too, would experience the loss of internet and phone service at random intervals and I was forced to reboot the router to cure it.
I've been looking around for possible solutions and discovered the following: - NetGears' FAQ's for my router include a comment that the router may have trouble staying connected if the modem is forced to renegotiate the lease on the IP address too often. It has something to do with the DHCP service. You may want to dig into NetGears website to see if you can find the same comment about your router. - When my cable modem was installed, the technician commented that the signal strength was pretty weak. He fiddled with some things and got it working OK. I filed that tidbit in my brain as something that may be useful to know and then didn't think too much more about it. - Once I got frustrated enough with having to reboot my router all the time, I put the two pieces together and got to wondering if they were related. I happened to have an amplified TV splitter lying around, so I hooked that into the line that feeds my cable modem. It seems to me that the router has been much more stable since I did that. Unfortunately, I don't really know enough about the affect that the amplified splitter has on the cable signal to be able to say that it is a good cure. Maybe someone with good knowledge of these things can chime in here... All I can really say is that it seems to be working for me!
Hope this helps! |
