PostPosted: Mon Dec 01, 2003 3:15 pm    Post subject: A solution for my Linksys/Motorola/Optonline blues? Reply with quote Back to top

For those who haven't seen my past threads, I have a few problems:

1) Optimum online flickers off for about 1-2 seconds once or twice a day.
2) This kicks my Motorola offline.
3) It doesn't kick my motorola offline if the motorola is INSIDE my Linksys router.
4). However, when the motorola was inside the Linksys, it didn't ring and didn't even go to voice mail. It just gave a busy signal or gave the caller a "cannot be completed as dialed" error message.

Anyway, I read something about some people also activating PORT TRIGGERING in addition to Port Forwarding, and for the last 24 hours +, I have been online and the Motorola has not been kicked off. (The Linksys seems to be better at maintaining a connection).

Anyway, I figured if some people have the linksys/motorola combo, try the port triggering option in addition to port forwarding.

And in the meantime, I'll let you know if and when it craps out again.

Hi,

I don't know what cable modem you have from OOL but a Vonage Tech mentioned to me on the phone yesterday that apparently there is a conflict with the firmware in the VT 1000 and 1005 and the Motorola SB5100 cable modem. You may also want to check out this post on the DSL reports forum:

I have the SB4200.

Ironically, I did a port scan with the Motorola as my frontline router and DSLREPORTS found vulnerabilities.

Now, with the Motorola inside my main router, I don't return a ping.

Also, I have had service for almost 2 days straight now since setting port triggering and forwarding and placing the Motorola inside my router.

if you log in to your linksys router http://192.168.1.1 (assuming your router is now your frontline firewall and your computer is connected to it directly), and then click on "advanced"

You will then see a selection for "port forwarding"

About 2/3 of the way down the page (for my router) there is a "port triggering" button. I clicked on it and then entered the same ports that I had selected for port forwarding.

Lo and behold, it's now 2 days without an outage. For all I know, it could crap out again tomorrow, but I'll keep you posted.

I think it seems to work because, as long as my ATA gets the signal to ring, my Linksys does a better job of keeping a connection even if my Optimum Online goes down every once in a while.

When this happened with my motorola and connected directly to my cable modem, I was kicked off all the time.

I am still up from the weekend. Dial tone. Phone rings. This setup seems to work.

Woohoo!

The new setup just pa$$ed a test of sorts. I was dialed into my home computer via gotomypc.com and i saw that the connection at home crapped out (bear in mind, my computer traffic is no longer routed thru my Vonage box).

I called my home number and it forwarded to my cell (my network availability backup).

I called a minute later when the computer at home was showing a good connection again and my phone rang at home.

This means that by using port triggering and placing my Vonage box (motorola) behind my linksys firewall, I am somehow preventing the Motorola from being permanently kicked offline.

4 Days and going strong. Very Happy

About port triggering: apparently, port triggering eliminates possible device conflicts by ensuring that the device that sends a request is the sames device that receives a response. This is also a way that 2 people with the same IP address can play online games even though both computers are using the same ports. For whatever reason, when I only use port forwarding, the linksys router doesn't let the Vonage box receive the signal that it needs to ring.

MOnk,

Could you list the exact ports you are forwarding/triggering as I would like to emulate your setup.

Ron:

5060-5063
69
123
10000-20000

The last range might not be necessary, but I did find them in a manual that came with Vonage. Besides, I'm not gonna screw with something that seems to be working.
