Nearly every person that calls me; or that I call, tell me that they can hear their voice echo a bit especially in the beginning of the call. Is there anything that can be done?

I have Metrocast cable internet, a D-Link DI-604 router, and the PAP2.

All tests to "testyourvoip" come out with a QOS of 95% or greater. Line tests on DSLReports all come out just fine as well. Also, it should be noted that this happens no matter what phone I'm using, or whether it's plugged directly into the PAP2 or my home wiring.

Actually, I just got the answer to my question and probably many others.

I guess the initial echo that the other party hears is because it takes a second for the echo cancellation circuit in the ATA to recognize the fact that an echo is occuring and adjust accordingly. This was exactly my problem. The person on the other end would hear an echo for a second and then it would die out. Voip to Voip calls according to this document would not have an echo, nor calls made to a quality PSTN. I guess it's now time for my family and friends to join Vonage and eliminate their "dirty" PSTNs.

Hope this helps others. It certainly helped me understand that it's not Vonage's fault.

I get echoes on cells and landlines...so could the cause be the same?

I get the same "echo" when using PAP2. It happens when someone uses a cell or landline phone. Usually not bad enough where they mention a problem. I notice it myself when I call home. I have not updated my firmware in PAP2, but don't think that the newest version will help. One odd thing is that it only happens on local calls. When people call from out of state, always crystal clear on both ends!?

I had this exact problem when I first signed up for Vonage. I called tech support. They turned down the volume of the line that the receiving party hears. That fixed the echoing problem.

I also had the same problem in the beginning. It seemed that with Vonage, the incoming calls voice sounded MUCH louder than on my POTS line.

My solution? I turned the reciever volume down and I haven't had a comment about it since.
