The reason alot of people put the non-vonage device in front is so they can use a REAL router as their gateway to the Internet. Vonage devices historically have issues with things like DHCP and high-bandwidth apps, so using the Vonage device as a VoIP-only box suits most people better. In the case of the WRT-54G Ver 4, QOS is a snap with "Port QOS", and saves you the trouble of loosing your internet connection when Vonage sends you new firmware, or if you have a problem, remotely rebooting your box. |

Thanks Dave, that was helpful. I have tried the setup my Belkin (very old, i think they discontinued it..) wireless router in front of the Vonage. However, I can't get the Vonage changes to stick. I am changing the vongage to the following
Belkin DHCP AND NAT ENABLED IP Address: 192.168.1.1 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 DHCP Server: Enabled NAT: Enabled Firewall: Enabled
Vonage router DHCP AND NAT DISABLED Static IP: 192.168.1.15 Sub Mask: 255.255.255.0 Gateway: 192.168.1.1 DNS1: 192.168.1 Local IP address: 192.168.1. 15
Also, i set the belkin's DMZ to 192.168.1.15 (per an earlier post). I hope you can help provide some input on the information I have provided. I wish I could understand all this stuff. |
