Post subject: Well, Vonage was worth trying.
But after losing the ability to get incoming calls every day, after multiple problem tickets and no end in sight, I am pretty sure that I am cancelling and probably switching to IDT for $39.99.
Was considering OptimumVoice for $35, but there's also no Canada, so I might as well go with proven POTS.
On the plus side, I'll be able to keep my current POTS number. On the negative, I'll lose free calls to Canada, and I was looking forward to that.
They offered to send me a new Motorola router, but I'm pretty much jaded at this point. I spend too much time on the phone with customer service listening to that endless loop of music. (I can hum the song by heart now).
The customer service reps at
Vonage
were all terrific. I also want to thank everyone here for their help. Has anyone here had any luck after switching boxes? I'd try it, but my 14 day trial is almost up. I don't want to be penalized for giving it another shot.
Best

monk, they are sending me another motorola, i will let you know next week if it this "fix" works. I do not blame you at all for being frustrated with
Vonage
. I also am! But they have extended my trial period and also gave me a free month service (I didn't believe it until I actually saw the credit on my billing statement). That is why I am giving
Vonage
more time to get it right! Did you ask them to extend trial and credit you for down time?

They didn't offer it, but I will bring it up on Monday. I now moved my ATA inside my router. It seems that about once or twice a day my cable connection goes out for about 1-2 seconds. This was kicking the Motorola offline and it was not recovering.
That caused my computer to be offine, and I couldn't access it with gotomypc.com remote software from work.
Now, with my ATA inside my router, my computer doesn't get kicked offline anymore. However, my phone doesn't usually ring. I either get forwarded to voice mail or the call cannot be completed.
I will try the new ATA if they extend my trial period. I drop 80-100 bucks a month on Verizon now and I hardly make any calls. Neither does my wife.

A few observations. It appears that
Vonage
made a major error in switching away from the Cisco ATA. I've been a
Vonage
customer since august, and after some initial problems its been working great. However, I have the Cisco ATA, which I think explains my stability.
Operating on DSL and two different Comcast locations I observed that it only took a momentary spike of either internet or power to knock everything offline. Now that I'm in my new house, I have my cable modem, ATA and router on a UPS. At this point I consider the
Vonage
to be 98.5% reliable as my old POTS line (which we didn't order when we moved, the
Vonage
is the sole phone line on the house)
Good luck to all, and keep telling
Vonage
that the motorolas are not cutting it!

I just think the issues are based on certain braodband companies and the new ATA. Monk said his cable would go down for a couple seconds which would in turn take down his ATA. The questin is why is his cable system doing that? Now, the ATA should be able to handle things like that occuring, so maybe he does have a bad ATA or maybe the firmware isn't programmed to handle that, just yet.
I have Charter Pipeline and haven't had any issues at all with the Motorola or with
Vonage
. My ATA stays up all the time, and I have yet to not be able to make calls(I very rarely get incoming calls tho).
If the new ATA doesn't fix Monk's problem, I would suspect it is a firmware issue and will be corrected at some point, but that doesn't help Monk now.

I have the latest firmware per
Vonage
. Per my cable company, something as simple as a neighbor fooling around with connections can cause a temporary flicker --one of the advantages of the shared network topology found in cable internet
I placed my ATA inside my router and I also turned on PORT TRIGGERING on my Linksys, even though I really don't know what it does.
Amazingly, my
Vonage
has been working and RINGING ever since.
I'll keep you posted if this ends up working for me. If it craps out, I will request a replacement ATA.

Post subject: Cisco vs Motorola ATA
I must be pretty lucky because
Vonage
sent me a Cisco. After some initial problems (mainly not be able to be heard by the other end), it's working just fine now. Also, I switched to a Netgear RP614 router.
