I would like to see if this is possible to connect. I use my PC in the basement and use the laptop upstairs because i can surf the net using the wireless feature. I use the wrt54g router for the networking. I recently recieved my Vonage router in the mail, and i am wondering if it is possible to connect the Vonage router to my laptop even thought it connects to the internet wireless. I am trying to firgure out a way where i can keep my phone upstairs instead of leaving it downstairs, going to be a pain to run down and answer the phone and also charging it. So if there is a way to do this, i would appreciate any input or advice on how to keep my phone from being downstairs.
Thanks |

Hmmm, well you have a few options. I think you are asking if you can share your Internet connection off of your laptop for the RT31P2. This could be done by enabling Internet Connection sharing but I wouldn't recommend this as you are relying on your laptop to provide connectivity from your RT31P2 to the Internet. In addition, I think you will find that the connection itself just isn't that reliable.
The easiest solution would just be to get a cordless phone with multiple handsets (at least 2) so that you can keep one upstairs and one downstars, the main one of course being downstairs.
A second option would be to wire your house for Vonage. This assumes that you no longer will have a landline and you have an existing phone jack in the basement where your Vonage router is. This way you can put the phone upstairs and connect it to an existing phone jack instead.
A third option would be to get a wireless bridge with a built in switch and put that upstairs and just hook your router up to that. You will lose the QoS feature though if the RT31P2 isn't hooked up directly to your Internet connection.

Thanks for the input. I guess I will have to connect it behind my wireless router. I am doing this right now but i can not communicate with the Vonage router. Any input would be great to try and figure this out.

You shouldn't have to communicate with the Vonage router from your computer on a regular basis. However, if you wish to, hook up a system to it directly (temporarily), log in, under Administration, enable "Remote Administration" You will also need to change your password if you are using the default one of "admin" In addition, you will need to specify a port. The default is 8080.
Then, when you hook it back up like it was, you can then use whatever IP address your wireless router assigns your Vonage router to access it. For example: http://192.168.1.5:8080. You could even give a static IP address if you want under Setup/Basic Setup/Internet Setup; just make sure that it is on the same network/IP range as your wireless one and that it won't overlap any IP that the wireless router assigns to another computer.
