Is this Vt1000v device an el-cheapo in terms of performance? I have this plugged into the motorola cable modem with dhcp/NAT on and auto client IP address - then a firewall to protect my network with NAT as well. I have this setup to use the QOS (which I don't think works) but after many downloads/uploads - I need to reboot the voice adapter to browse again.
On my firewall, I see my NAT ports drop from 1000 to zero after heavy activity on the upoads and need to reboot that as well, but more often than not, rebooting the voice lets me browse again. I would try a bridge mode but could not get to work with the cable modem thru the firewall onto the network.
Is there a higher performing voice adapter that work better than this motorola? |

pretty much.
it's best used behind a router (like the linksys pap2). many people have good success with the linksys wrt series routers. but most anything should work.
the current adapters available are the lnksys pap2 (small, has to be behind a router), the linksys rt31p2 (what vonage ships out, is a router itself, more robust but has it's share of problems also) and the linksys wrt54gp2 (wireless router with phone ports).
overall, it seems everyone is happy with a linksys wrt router and basically any voice adapter. if that's not an option, the linksys rt31p2 has qos and is a 3 port router. |

Hey jameson
I Have the motorola as well and i am experiencing the same problem while using emule. I dont have any other routers so its definetly the VT1000v it has problems port forwarding. If you find the answer to this problem please post it here and I will do the same
Vonage does offer a Lynksys adapter.
Is there anyone who has the lynksys that can tell us if they are having problems with file sharing?
Thanks |

I think I am going to try the linksys PAP2 - hoping the performance is better. You are right, I believe the port forwarding or the NAT is terrible on the Motorola and is causing the problem.
I wonder if Vonage will send me the replacement - they never respond to email so I guess I have to call - too bad, they used to respond to email support within 2 days. Been waiting over a month with 2 tickets - I gave up. Looks like they are too busy. Keep that up and watch their customers go elsewhere.
Anyway, my choices are limited... for the firewall I use is from watchguard (I don't like linksys firewalls - too basic) so I can only try to find a firewall with QOS and plug the voice adapter on the QOS port - or hope the PAP2 works better. If I find it works - will post again.

Keep me posted - if yours works (because you are in the same boat), I will call them to get the linksys.
Eagerly awaiting your progress.

it is not really the port forwarding that is the problem..
there is no real firewall protection.. The internet itself is so full of crap that it locks up the unit. I keep mine behind the Linksys Router. WRT54GS. (AWESOME router BTW)
No more problems with unit anymore! |

with your voice adapter behind the router - what happens during heavy downloads/uploads - do you lose voice quality? That is the problem with putting it behind a router that does not have QoS specified on a port. I originally had setup this way but large downloads chopped the voice.
I did not think the WRT line has QoS - but maybe the new ones do. |

I had vonage ship the linksys RT31P2 - what garbage. I am looking for another service (calling comcast tomorrow). I removed my firewall and went from cable modem to RT, started a BitTorrent upload (11Kb/s) and soon it stops my normal browsing within 20minutes. Even the motorola worked fine with an 11k upload (albeit needed to reboot over time).
These routers are not very good at any upload traffic. I have not even tested heavy downloads yet on the RT - and I figure it won't be pretty. Hoping comcast has a better offering or need to look for a real router with QoS.
Frustrated.. |
