I have been sent in circles by trying to get this god forsaken lump of crap to work - excuse my french - you can tell I've had enough.

I have the standard Linksys RT31P2 - and I think I have it configured right.

I have

DSL line from the wall to my DSL Modem (speadstream)
Network cable from the dsl modem into the Linksys box.

Network cable from that to my pc network card

Phone (n tone) pluged into the linksys box.

All are powered on.

I have internet through this configuration (more by luck than judgement I think) but I still have no dial tone.

In fact - no power to the phone at all.

And the lights flash on the linksys unit in a regular sequence.

DASH - DASH - DOT - DOT - DOT. (thats morse code speak !!)

I have done EVERYTHING the troubleshooter guide - installation book and help topics state on anything i can find - still no joy.

So, if anyone is anymore the bleedin wiser - please help.

thanks

Chris

are you putting the dsl modem in bridge mode and enabling pppoe on the linksys?

I'm sorry - I have absolutely no bloody idea what so ever.

I dont think the PPPoE is - I have a connection that is live all the time - the PPPoE on the Linksys asks for a username and password for my ISP - I dont have one !

As far as the bridge thing goes?? Could you explain?

As far as I can see the modem isn't connected to the PC - or is it supposed to be? I followed the books etc for the wiring - as above - and the modem connects to the linksys and then to the pc - that is correct - yes?

I have a Speadstream 5200 Ethernet/usb adsl modem. There are no settings on it i can change and as it's not connected directly to the pc and therefore not within my network settings - I dont know how I can change it.

Please advise if you can

Chris

Thanks for your help

Chris

sounds like you aren't in the US. not sure about other countries, but dsl here uses pppoe and some people have issues if they don't put the dsl modem in bridge mode and set the linksys to log in to the isp. if your isp uses dhcp then just keep the linksys on get ip autmatically.
the default ip for the speedstream is http://192.168.254.254
would be good if you have the manual. there is some information about it (albeit for a different dsl modem and in the US) here:

thanks John

I just went onto aol to IM you as you were online - but no luck.

I am in the Dominican Republic - the ISP here is Verizon just like the usa - but as i say - it is connected all the time and I have never been given a username and password for it - does it sound right?

Also, I have internet - no problem.

My AOL is TREMAIN1 too if you go on.

Thx

Chris

I understand you have internet, that's not the issue. it's putting the modem in bridge mode and having the rt31p2 do the work. you need to find out what connection type you have (pppoe, dhcp, etc) or just try them all on the rt31p2 until one works. calling your isp should yield an answer for that.
the default ip for the rt31p2 is http://192.168.15.1 (password admin)

I have connected the adsl modem via the usb port and I have 'bridged' the two connections - which I think you have said.

still nothing.

i will contact my ISP - but it seems to all work on aquiring adresses automatically.

What i dont get is on the Vonage website it states that the RT31P2 generates a dial tone REGARDLESS of internet connection !
