PostPosted: Sun Apr 03, 2005 10:33 am    Post subject: Help with Sveasoft (WRT54G) QoS Reply with quote Back to top

I'm repeating a post that I put up at Sveasoft in case anyone here can help. Voice quality is so bad that I had to forward calls to my cell phone.

I have been using Vonage for my home business use for a while now, and was pretty happy, so I took the plunge and switched my home phone over as well. I don't use the business line that much, so quality has never been an issue, for the most part.

Voice quality on the home line has been horrible, to the point where we are calling people back on our cell phones because you can't understand a thing. My wife is, understandably, annoyed.

OK, so here's what I've done. I spent a few hours yesterday cleaning up my wiring closet, and documenting my home LAN:
http://www.vwfans.com/stuff/home_network.jpg

This morning both lines worked fantastic, until I realized I had not plugged my Dell switch back in, so there was nothing else on the network.
Once that was turned on, quality dropped to horrible again.
I tried checking messages on my business line.
"Please en--- the -ass-ode -or --is phone."
Yeesh.

What I have tried so far:
I switched both Vonage ATAs to static IPs.
I measured my bandwidth at around 3000 down, 135 up (why it is slow slow on the uplink I do not know - this is OptimumOnline and I will check with them on the speed issue. If Vonage truly requires 90k per line, that could explain a lot).
In QoS, I have the following settings:

port: uplink 100, downlink 2100 for lan&wlan (should I use WAN instead?)
services: bittorrent set to bulk, SIP set to premium
netmask: none listed
mac: priority for both Vonage ATAs set to premium
ethernet: priority for both Vonage ATAs set to premium, rest of network is on bulk

I'm not sure where to find the actual config files on the Linksys but if they are helpful I can paste them here.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.[/b][/url]

This should be set to WAN.

Use netmask and put each ip of the ata's with a /32 on the end of each one.

mac: priority for both Vonage ATAs set to premium
Don't use the mac priority, doesnt work that well.

ethernet: priority for both Vonage ATAs set to premium, rest of network is on bulk

Look for my post that I made yesterday. I also think you are having ISP issues. You upload looks a little weak.

Mustang, I tried your changes and it seems like they helped.
I just made an international call and it sounded fine on both ends.

Aspect - I will check your post. I agree the uplink ****, apparently OOL has been capping some customers, I opened a support ticket to find out if this is the case and if so, how to get it reversed.

Thanks guys.

Please post your results from here:

I never have issues with OOL and I get my monies worth of usage.

Update. The QoS is working very well now. I'm not sure which of the steps finally got it working (adding the static IP I think, but not positive).
I hope this post will help future users with the same issue.

I called OOL and they confirmed that yes, they had capped my upload speed due to "excessive activity". I don't do peer to peer or anything funky, though I have had to transfer some ISO images to my work system a few times. They removed the cap but cautioned me to limit my uploads or it would happen again "for protection of our network".

I've got to see if I can user the Sveasoft stuff to throttle my uploads now.

I have the Sveasoft Version 6..the last one before your version....I tried the QOS...didnt see much of a difference on or off....I have mine off. Just my $.02 worth. Did you just upgrade to the pre 7?
If so, go backwards to the one before and try it.
