I am currently with Sympatico and am very eager to try Vonage as an alternative to Bell.
My question is... I was told by Bell (no bias there huh) that I absolutely require a Bell connection in order to use my DSL service.
Is this a fact, or are they just saying this to lean me away from going with a "better" alternative?
I would appreciate any comments or suggestions from the fellow members.
If it helps any, I am in the Ottawa (613) area. |

My understanding is that few Bell companies allow for "nude" DSL service. This means, no dial tone, no DSL.
The alternative is to see what POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service) with no features costs. This way you still have a telephone for use in case something goes wrong on your DSL or VOIP system.
Just a thought. |

Bell currently does not offer naked DSL but they are apparently going to start very soon. See here:

Bell is currently beta testing their own VOIP service, so once they release that, they would be shooting themselves in the foot by not offering naked DSL.
Btw, Darkev is going to come on here and rant at length about Bell being the source of all evil. Just ignore him, he does that to every thread mentioning Bell. |

Have you considered going with Rogers Cable? They offer high speed internet. If Bell is going to play hard ball - you can too. |

I am not a fan of Rogers internet. I had it once, and regret ever using it.
I am however very interested in VoIP. We are testing it at work and I love it!!
I think I will look into the POTS alternative. Always best to have some sort of "redundancy" right?
Thanks for all the great comments folks! |

My parents are moving to Waterloo, and I did not see the point in paying 44.95 + tax for their 3 Mbps service.
Now we got bell for 25/month for 6 month with 1 month free and then 44.95 for the rest 6. The agent also told me that I should call back after the year and talk to bell since they will gave me a deal for sure. (When i lived on rez me and my roommate shared the High-speed which we paid 24.99/month).
So the cost for the 5mbps (dry dsl) is approx 34.95 for 12 months which is better than Rogers in cost and speed. Also Rogers has started kicking out torrent packets which affects my downloads a lot. Torrents seem to run just fine on bell..
Will be connecting my Vonage to the Bell connection next month. Hopefully there will be no problems.
So I think Bell Highspeed > Rogers.
Bell = consistent speed
Rogers maybe faster at times, overall its slower (depends what area you are in and how many ppl are on at the same time) |

When your Bell service goes down (and consequently your Vonage line), good luck getting through to Sympatico for support. With Rogers you can go to the corner Rogers shop and complain in person. I find this is a huge advantage because you're dead in the water without your Internet connection.
Rogers's Express package is also now 6 Mbps. |

I love my rogers cable connection, it works wonderfull.. I dont' pay full price, it's all bundled in with my HDTV digital cable.. total my bill is $135/mo :O but my bro lives in the other apt. in this house, so we split with him 50/50..
the 3M service was just upped at no charge to 5M Sympatico did this too of course... still only 384k up tho
weird, I just looked on Rogers web site, and it still shows it as being a 3M service.. I got an e-mail saying it's been up to 5, and speed tests show me at almost 5..
Vonage works great on Rogers Cable |

I dont like rogers the company. But I dont like bell either.
I have Rogers 5Mbs in toronto.. and Im constantly exceeding the 500K in the afternoon to late evening. I think here in toronto the just give you unrestricted access.
Anyways... Rogers has good internet. even though they are a bad company. But its still better than givin your coin away to Ma Bell
Wishin i was still in Niagara on the 10Mbs line - Cogeco is the ultimate. |
