Just thought Id share my setup and settings again for any newcomers that might can use the help.

Motorola SB5100 Hooked up to a Linksys WRT54G Running Sveasoft Firmware>Linksys RT31PT2, Static IP, DHCP OFF, and Remote Admin on.

Here are some pics of how it looks. I really like how nice the routers stack. Port 1 out of the Router is plugged in to my house wiring and powering 4 Phones (One of which is a 3 set base station phone). Port 2 has a shorted RJ-11 to cancel out the Phaser noise.

I have to remove it for any config changes or Vonage Updates to occur. I usually do these in a manual fashion. Here are the PICS

Hey! Neat! Nice setup. I'm jealous of the WRT54G. I'm planning on buying one in the future. Can't make up my mind between the WRT54G and WRT54GP2 which has a couple of ATA's in it and I can send the RT31P2 back. How does the 802.11g work and what is it's range, in reality? Likewise for the 802.11b? I like the way that Linksys provides for stacking their products. No one else does that, to my knowledge.

There is a favorite Hot Spot that I frequent that advertises free Wireless Internet. Great Idea, just doesn't work. I offered to fix it for the owner but he didn't know a broadband router from a roto router. So, it's back to Starbucks with my laptop.

I think you did a nice presentation. My only question is, is it really necessary to set static IP's and turn DHCP off? I've always preferred to let the routers sort out the IP addressing. Just my preference, that's all. I see nothing wrong with your setup.

Did you provide a Topic Name that will be easy to find through the search engine? Nice job and Good Luck!

Mike

MIke, the main reason Im using Static IP on my RT is because of the QOS Settings I have in place. One of my options (Netmask) I reference the IP Specifically.

I also access the router's admin page like this from my PC

192.168.1.150:8080

So it just makes sense to use a Static IP to make sure things never get out of whack. I also think its good practice for using 2 routers to make sure DHCP is only running on one.

Thanks!

btw with the Sveasoft Firmware on the WRT you can up the power levels way over stock and tweak your ranges dramatically.

AspectTec, two quick newbie questions. Is your RT plugged into Port 3 which is set to premium and 256K? Second, what are your DNS2 and DNS3 set for? Sorry for the newbie questions but I am trying to figure what does what. Thanks for posting this. It has been a great help.

Yes it is. And the DNS settings in 2 and 3 really do nothing since it is retrieved from my router. I just put them in for the heck of it really.

there is an Apple Store I frequent for free wifi. It's great, just sit out in the hall of the mall and surf away. I've used it to get work done while on a date before :X

Just curious - is it not redundant to specify QoS for SIP, your RT31P3's IP address, it's MAC address, and the port it's connected to on the WRT54G?

My similar setup performs fine with just the protocol specified in QoS.

SIP is really just session initiation (Call setup and terminate messages). Some of the settings are probably redundant yes but on the other side they do not hurt anything. Smile

Can you please explain in detail how your WRT54G and RT31P2 are wired, starting with the Cable-Modem?

I have a Toshiba Cable Modem into the Uplink of the WRT54G. A standard ethernet cable from one of the 4 ports of the WRT54G to the uplink connection of the RT31P2.

I'm interested in knowing if the RT31P2 should be uplinked with the Cablemodem for better performance. What is your opinion on this?

Thanks,

W<

I am thinking of replacing my Toshiba PCX1100 since I am having some voice quality issues. I can't decide whether to go with the Motorola SB5100 and a separate WRT54G wireless router or to get the Linksys WCG200 combo cable modem/wireless gateway/router.

Any thoughs or suggestions are appreciated.
