When I first got the RT31P2 I tried it directly behind my cable modem. My phone service seemed pretty good but I had many network inconsistencies. (Lag in games, general slowness at times) without even being on the phone.
The WRT54G with third party firmware has some very Nice QOS Features and is a superior router.
Once I put the RT Device behind my WRT things are great and work flawlessly. |

Hey, I've setup my wrt54g and rt31p2 the same as you have in this post. I'm using talisman basic 1.0.4 on the wrt54g. I also have an sb5100 modem.
Could you provide some more screenshots of any other options you changed and why, and some more detailed info of the QoS items on the WRT54g?
I set my uplink and downlink to my max dl/ul (512/5120) and my pc connection basically died... so i reset them to 256/1024 and it seems a little better. Also I changed the ethernet port priority from all 4 on premium to bulk, even tho I'm only using wireless, and port 4 is the RT31P2.
on the RT31p2, should I disable QoS ? any other changes? disable firewall, etc?
Any other hints or advice on settings on either the wrt54g or the rt31p2 would be great!
This really helped me get a good start, now for the tweaking. Thanks! |

Just a tip... jpeg + screenshot = bad. I'd say the best format for screenshots is PNG. |

Hi, having read your post I have a couple of questions for you, I am using exactly the same setup as yourself.

Here are some pics of how it looks. I really like how nice the routers stack. Port 1 out of the Router is plugged in to my house wiring and powering 4 Phones (One of which is a 3 set base station phone). Port 2 has a shorted RJ-11 to cancel out the Phaser noise |
Do you not find the WRT and RT31 both run hot when stacked on top of each other? I moved mine to side by side as I was concerned how hot they were running.
What is this phaser noise and what situation would I hear it in? I tried shorting out the spare port with a RJ-11 loop like yours but cannot hear any difference even when off hook and after pressing a key to remove dialtone.
| Quote: | | I have to remove it for any config changes or Vonage Updates to occur. I usually do these in a manual fashion. Here are the PICS |
Why do you have to removethe shorting plug for upgrades to occur?
Regards,
Paul |

It sounds like white or air noise and its very audible if you have one of the defective units.
The shorted RJ in port 2 interferes with the update process somehow. Im not exactly sure but I saw a post about it here before and the poster was right.
The RTP132 seems to run hotter than the WRT so I put it on top but to answer you question no I have never noticed any issues. |

FWIW, I had two RT31P2's before they finally shipped me an RTP300. Both RT31's had line noise (white noise) and the one had that phaser noise you describe. The RTP has none of these audio glitches. It also runs far cooler than the RT31 routers do. |
