It's not that I love my phone number, but everyone knows it. And I want to keep it. The problem is, they don't offer a transfer for a Gatineau number.

I'm not familiar with this system, and I've noticed that some members here are from the Gatineau area. Can you guide me with what I should do?

DarKev is your Gatineau expert and "neighbour". DarKev has an Ottawa number with his Vonage account though. I think that the only 819 numbers available with Vonage are in Sherbrooke which doesn't help you (unless everyone that calls you lives in Sherbrooke). You'll probably want to go with an Ottawa number depending on who is calling you and from where.

I'm also from the Ottawa/Gatineau area. I noticed even with companies like Primus, you can not get 819 numbers for the Gatineau region only for sherbrooke. They assume that if you are living in the Gatineau region, that you would take a 613 area code number local to the Ottawa region as it is also local to Gatineau.

Yes this ****, but I dont believe there is any other option then taking the 613 number from the Ottawa side As I believe Sherbrooke is long distance to Gatineau.

Hi there, yes I live in Gatineau - the Aylmer sector.

Keep in mind that Gatineau has a population of 72,000 people, whereas across the river in Ottawa, there are over 1 million people. Vonage, as well as other new phone companies have focused on larger cities. If you look at the cities across Canada where Vonage and Primus offer service, they are all larger than Gatineau with a heavier population. Even Sherbrooke is larger than Gatineau, but if you pick the Sherbrooke 819 area code, you will get a Sherbrooke exchange which means you will be long distance to everyone in the Outaouais region.

The best solution is to get a 613 number. It actually works out better anyhow, thanks to Bell and their ridiculous setup.

5 cities on the Quebec side amalgamated in 2004. There was Aylmer, Hull, Buckingham, Masson-Angers and Gatineau itself. While we were all split, Bell charged long distance to call from Aylmer to Buckingham or Gatineau. Now that we have amalgamated and are all one big city, Bell continues to charge long distance to dial someone living in the former areas as mentioned above. This is ridiculous. The area that comprises the new Gatineau is nowhere nearly as big as Ottawa, yet if you live in Ottawa you can pretty much call anywhere toll free. This issue has been in the newspapers lots, but Bell is still not doing a darn thing about it. Through Bell, it is long distance to call Gatineau (old) from Gatineau (Aylmer). Yet, Gatineau (old) and Gatineau (Aylmer) can both call Ottawa. Right now, If you have an 819 number, people in Kanata, Orleans, Bar Haven, and several other surrounding areas including North Gower cannot call you without long distance charges.

If you pick a 613 number, people in all of these areas can call you toll free. It's a great way to beat Bell!

Another reason why 819 (Gatineau) is not offered is because it would be difficult to set up the system for local calling here. Ottawa is local to Gatineau, but Vonage goes by Area Codes, not physical location. Even though Gatineau is about 1 mile away from Ottawa, it has a different area code because Gatineau is in Quebec and Ottawa is in Ontario. The only two provinces I know of that shares the same area code in Canada are Nova Scotia and PEI. Since Gatineau has the 819 area code, and Ottawa has the 613 area code, 613 calls would not be considered local if you had a Gatineau number. This is one of the big problems when two cities are next door to each other and share different area codes. Even Rogers wireless cell phones cannot call toll free to the Gatineau area if you are in Ottawa. They have it divided by the area code, which is a shame.

You would end up losing your 819 number unfortunately, but that's good! Your local calling area will be so much bigger with a 613 number, and people from all over the Outaouais region will now call you toll free. I happily gave up my Gatineau number which restricted me.

Here is something else to keep in mind. With Vonage, you never need to dial the area code when calling someone who has your same area code. Even if it is long distance! For example, Kingston, Ontario has the same area code as Ottawa, Ontario (613). If you call the 7-digit number of someone living in Kingston, you will get them.

The down side of this is that if you have a 613 number, you will need to dial the area code if it is not a 613 number that you are calling. Therefore if you get a 613 line, you will need to dial the 819 area code for any Gatineau calls that you make.

Keep in mind that Bell announced within the next 3 years, everyone will be required to dial all 10 digits if they are living in the Ottawa/Gatineau region because they are running out of phone numbers. If you are with Vonage, you will not have to worry about that. You will already be dialing 10 digits for Gatineau, and for Ottawa you can continue to dial only 7, while people with Bell will be forced to dial all 10 digits no matter what.

I hope this helps you make your decision.

Well 1 correction. I do have a Rogers Cell Phone.. It isn't long distance to Call from Ottawa (whether it be Orleans/Barhaven, etc). to Gatineau (Old gatineau/Aylmer). But what you would have to do is dial 819 before the number otherwise Rogers will assume the number you are dialing has a 613 area code. (Although I find it funny that this isn't the case if you are calling to Hull ..ie..you can just dail a 7 digital number without the 819..unlike Aylmer/Old Gatineau).

If you are asking yourself will if I go with Vonage and get a 613 area code, (yes it will be a free call from anyone in the Ottawa/Gatineau) region to call you), that it will be long distance for you to call them. Will you dont have to worry about that on the $19.99 500 minutes plan.. because whether it be local/long distance..its still using your 500 minutes. And if you get the $39.99 North America plan.. well obviously that doesn't matter cause you wont incur any additional charges for calling anywhere in Canada/US.. The only plan where it may matter is the $34.99 Province-Wide Calling + 500 LD. Because when you obtain the 613 number, calling Gatineau would use yup your 500 minutes and not be considered a province-wide call

Hope this info also helps

Three people that I know cannot dial Gatineau without incurring a long distance charge. My best friend is with Rogers and she lives in Ottawa. I asked her to use the area code and she did. A recording came on stating that she must dial "1" first before the number that she was calling, and she was in my house! She was in Gatineau and could not call Gatineau. A woman that I work with could not call me with it either, area code or no area code. She had to dial 1 first. Maybe they are on different plan. I know that both of them have fairly new plans. Maybe previous plans allowed the calls to go through.

cell phones, regardless of carier have a larger local calling area.. with my Bell Mobility phone I can call to Kitchener form my house, but if I had a Bell landline it owuld be longdistance.. but yet, when I'm in Kitchener with my cell I cannot call back to Woodstock.. and back 5 years ago ,before wdstk could call London locally, I could call it for local on my cell from wdstk, then they made landlines local .. Smile

this area has all the stupi dweird LD crap too on landlines.. I could call from Woodstock to London and almost every in between locally, but there is one village that Cannot call locally, but they can call all the same places I can call locally.. it's stupid.. so I have a London cell number cuz it's local call to my friend, and when I use it here in wdstk I call woodstock locally and they can call london locally.. and that works out mint cuz I got a London Vonage number too.. so I am alocal call to my friends who otherwise would be long distance, and of course my wifes family is all the way down in SC and they would be LD to us and us to them, but we have a Columbia # too and they can call us for free Smile

It's great that Vonage resolves a lot of these issues and bottlenecks that we used to have to deal with when Bell was our only phone company.

It's nice to see positive comments. People tend to only speak when they are being negative.

Well your friend's cell phone is messed because for one.. Say I went down to toronto with my ottawa cell phone, It is free to call anyone in the toronto area because your cell is using the closest tower.

So if she was in Gatineau tryign to call someone in gatineau.. it would use the closest tower (I'm not sure where it is.. I know one really close here in Aylmer). But anyways, I've never had problems contacting anyone in the whole Gatineau region (even if the call is made from Ottawa... I just make sure I put the 819 before the number I dialed.

You should tell her to Contact Rogers and inquire why its LD for her.
