I did have them set to different IP's previously, and still had the connection problems-but that was before I put the jumper cable on.
My internet setting is not static, its set to obtain automatically. If you turn off DHCP on the RT31P2 you will still have a working solution. The only reason I tell you to do this is because you can have problems with 2 DHCP servers running on your network. Only your other router needs to have this on.

Guess I skipped the part where you said that info was from your status page. I did end up turning off the DHCP server, since that could cause problems down the road.
