Generally the price difference between US and Canadian electronics has shrunk to the point that smuggling into Canada is not worth the trouble; and I believe that Canadian customs have come to recognize this.

I travel with my computer between the US and Canada quite often and it has been a long time since customs have even looked at my computer case.

That's good to know, but it would certainly put a damper on my vacation if my Vonage adapter was confiscated at the border. I doubt it would happen. The worst is they might open it up to see if there is anything like drugs in it. Aside from voiding the Motorola warranty, I would hope they would not break it.

Good gosh, you are cautious.

There must be a 1000 places to hide contraband, why on earth would you choose some small electronics box any more than your camera, your computer, the lining of your luggage, etc, etc.

Have a good vacation, don't break the law, don't speed, but above all... floss.

I reciently travelled to Orlando, Fort Lauderdale and the Bahamas... Each of the hotels I stayed in had Wirelsss access.. But along with that, they also provided Wired connect. If you check you room telephone there is also a Data connection on it.

Hope this information helps.

When you say they provided "wireless" and "wired" connect, does this mean you did not need a modem? You could just plug your computer right in to this port? Or in my case, I would be plugging in my Vonage adapter.

I have sene lots of hotels with an Ethernet port in teh room, and they advertized Free Broadband (or High Speed) Internet.. with an actual wired port I could see that they coul dmonitor how much bandwidth you used, but if it was wireless, they woul dhave no idea which one of their guests were using that bandwidth, they'd just see a huge increase..

now, as far as using your Vonage ATA with a laptop ad on your lap top you are getting a wireless signal, I read in a bunch of post in the main forum that this is possible, you use your laptop to connect to teh wifi, then plug your ATA into the ethernet port on your laptop, but you need a Crossover cable, not a regular ethernet cable.. they have the same plugs, but are wired differently..

and they you have to turn on some connection sharing in windows, there are a bunch of posts, prolly a bunch linked to by that post that was linked here on page 1..

so in short answer, it is possible to use your ATA behind your wifi laptop.. Smile

That is really cool. There is only one problem - I don't have a wifi laptop. In fact, I don't own a laptop at all. I just have this desktop computer. It's actually a large tower model.

In any case, I don't think I would want to be packing a laptop, an ATA, a telephone, plus a modem just to talk back home for free while I'm away. It's too much baggage, and a lot of hassle. I'd likely end up spending hours trying to configure the thing instead of spending fun time at Disney World. Smile

I was hoping that you could just plug the ATA directly into the Ethernet port in the hotel room and it would work! I guess that would be too simple. Rolling Eyes

If you goto a hotel which provides inroom internet access. The data port on the room telephone will most likely have an ethernet port (Data port). All you need to do is bring the Vonage Adaptor and (an extra telephone). Plug in the Eithernet cable from the data port into your Vonage adaptor and volla.

Very Happy

yeah, I wasn't saying that you couldnt' plug it in in a hotel.. sorry< i didn't really finish explaining it..

you coul dmost likely in most hotels just plug in and go.. now they might be blocking ports, but it's wortha shot I guess.. for what it takes to pack it and a $7 walmart phone, that $7 phone is cheaper than any calling cards, but then too, if you're in FL, then go lay out by the pool or on teh beach of totally forget abotu us suckers back here.. LFMAO! thats what I do when we go see my wifes family in SC, forget about the cold up here.. lol.. Very Happy
