Hi,
Been trying Vonage for almost a month now and have a persistent noise/static issue. It has improved a little but still there and annoying wife. I just called her from work and connection better on my end and a little better on hers.
We have a Uniden TRU8885 phone system and wondering. I am using a PAP2 (dont have firmware version since at work), hooked up to a Linksys WRT54G router.
I have tried a traditional phone a few weeks ago and still had noise then.
So tonight I am going to do some more troubleshooting, and am looking for suggestions. I know firmware a must check. But what about electrical, wire quality, PAP2 device quality. RF interference (the phones are True 5.8GHz so should have little interference) or anything else that might generate the static.
Thanks, hopes can get this resolved would save me a lot on phone bills. |

This is a simple fix! Just plug another phone into line 2 on the PAP2 and leave it off the hook...OR...take a phone cable and short out the center two pins and then plug the RJ-11 into your PAP2. Do a search in this forum and you will find many who have fixed this issue with the above solution.

I have tried that and the static is still there. I am running 2.0.13b firmware.
Curious is it normal to hear the static if you plug line in to the second port. |

There is a definite difference in mine. If I unplug the dead phone I have plugged into Port 2 the static is very noticeable. However, when it's plugged in the quality is no different than I had with my land-based phone. You may want to contact Vonage about this and have them send out a new device (unless you bought it on your own). |

Vonage doesn't send pap2's but I question the validity of these statements like "if you buy it retail Vonage won't replace it" and the other versions going around. I'm pretty sure they would, and I'm pretty sure it's been done and talked about before on this board. |

Right...forgot they don't send out PAP2s...I bought mine at Circuit City. I am pretty sure I have read on this forum that they will not replace those units...could be wrong, but that's what I thought I had read. I would think that Linksys would be replacing them and not Vonage.... |

yeah I need to look at the manual. it talks about warranty replace. I bought mine at Best Buy.
I dread the need to call Vonage Support though and reconfigure a new device. The wait time sometimes is less than fun.
I think I am going to have to go to BB and pick up another device see if still get that issue though. |

yeah it's going around everywhere but I have a hard time believing that if your box is broke or whatever Vonage won't send you an rt31p2. just like they did for jnuzzi who originally had an mta, then got a wrt54gp2, then Vonage sent him an rt31p2. he also mentions linksys sent another one too, which I find surprising. it seems like linksys wants nothing to do with these units. I think their support would be swamped (and probably is to a certain extent) with hundreds of thousands of their devices out there that are really made for Vonage who has their own tech support for them (fwiw). yes they make them and yes I see people's point, but I don't necessarily agree.

well I'll call Vonage and ask. I really want to use the service but wife is not happy with the level of noise. So if I can reduce it more i think I have her convinced. |

re-tried off hook /short on fax line didn't really improve anything. So starting to think hardware.
Especially since the other day called number from work and on my end was crystal clear. |
