PostPosted: Sun Mar 27, 2005 1:57 pm    Post subject: Vonage ATA or VoIP device causing DSL modems to disconnect? Reply with quote Back to top

I'm having a strange problem. I have ADSL (PPPoE) which connects to a Linksys router, which then feeds my personal desktop PC and my Vonage Voip device. This setup has worked well for quite a long time, but vey recently whenever I pick up the phone attached to the Vonage system and dial a number my ADSL modem disconnects. I get a normal dialtone and everything works well until I start to dial a number. Then bang, the modem disconnects and starts to reconnect, which I guess is being triggered by the router.

Since I have PPPoE, I have a username and password, so I have to use the router to log into the system.

The ADSL provider says there is nothing wrong with the system, and that they won't troubleshoot the problem, since it only occurs when the Voip device is being used, which is something they won't support.

Anyone have a similar problem? I'm trying to figure out what is going on and would appreciate any help. Right now I can't use the system at all Sad

John,

Do you have another telephone that you can swap out with your present one. See if the problem persists with the new phone.

Mike

PostPosted: Mon Mar 28, 2005 12:05 am    Post subject: Here's the debugging steps I've taken Reply with quote Back to top

1) Tried a few different phones plugged into the ATA device
2) Checked all the settings on the router
3) updated the router firmware
4) Replaced all the ethernet and telephone wires

I'm going to try and convince a friend to bring over his router to swap out with me so that I can see if the problem goes away, but I don't think his wife will agree Smile So my next step will problem be to bring my Vonage ata box over to another friend that has broadband, just to make sure it's not the box causing the trouble. The problem is his ADSL modem is not the same model as mine; it could be some weird interaction between all my equipment.

Anyway, I'm still pressing ahead to try and convince the ADSL provider to bring me a new modem, just to test.

Here's my equipment list:

router: Linksys WRT54G
ADSL modem: Some chinese brand, no english writing
ATA: Cisco SystemsATA 186

My ISP is local Beijing Telcom (I'm living abroad right now, based out of NYC, USA) so I don't have a lot of broadband choices.

Again, any other debugging ideas would be greatly appreciated.

As of right now I know that it's not the equipment in my local apartment. I dragged all my stuff down to a friend across town and everything worked perfectly,

Therefore, something about the type of connect that Vonage wants causes my ISP to drop my connection. For the life of me I can't figure it out. Unfortunately I am here in Beijing China, and I have no luck finding something at the ISP who even can talk to me about Voip.

So any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

Do you think your ISP could have blocked the Voip ports?

Try this http://testyourvoip.com/

Also type this at the command promt

tftp tftp.vonage.net get test
it should say successful 5 bytes in 1 second, else if it gives error then probably your ISP has blocked the Voip ports

Thanks
Anu

C:\home\John>tftp tftp.vonage.net get test
Transfer successful: 5 bytes in 1 second, 5 bytes/s

C:\home\John>

I also tried that web site and the Vonage test your bandwidth thing. they are slow sometimes but I get a connection and my ISP doesn't reset my modem.

Not sure if that stuff stresses the connection in the same way over the same ports. I don't think I'm getting blocked, my friend has the same ISP and he is just down the street and everything worked over there. This is China though, it would be possible that they just blocked new accounts or something.

Any suggestions on a good way to truly mimic what the ATA is doing? I am seriously considering putting an ethernet snooper on this to see what can seen that way.
