I was wondering if there are any problems with getting Bell Highspeed Ultra? I have heard that some Voip services (Primus) don't work over Rogers Extreme. I hope to get Ultra, but only if I know it works with my Vonage.

Any users?

Thanks.

Hmm, I wonder if Bell Ultra high speed works the way regular high speed should be working. Right now, their high speed in the Ottawa region is just a tad bit better than a 52k modem.

Who told you Primus doesn't work on Rogers?

Rogers doesn't do any port blocking. Chances are the person who you talked to has a bad connection or doesn't know what they're doing.

Vonage works fine on Bell.

Well the so called Bell ULTRA that my sister has - and she is less than 1km from CO - shows speeds of less than 2K down and 500K up - I know of no Rogers Extreme user getting less than 4K and usually more.

Now some Rogers users in dense metro areas seem to have issues however here in rural Ontario, outside K-W, I see on average about 4.7K and Rogers / Vonage are flawless.

And no PPOE hassels to worry about.

Are you switching to Vonage? If yes, how come you did not stay with Primus?

I have a friend locally who is using Primus Canada and he has uncovered some problems. One of which he cannot call me at my Ottawa/Gatineau number. He gets a message stating that the number is not in service. Yet everybody else, Bell, Telus, Sprint, and other Vonage customers can call me. Primus is supposedly working on it, but it has been a week and still not resolved. Ironically he can call me on my Vonage virtual number that I have in Nova Scotia.

Another problem he's having is when he blocks his number, it comes through with some other strange number. It is not his number, but it is a consistent number that shows up on call display whenever he blocks his number. Weird, eh? If you call it, it just rings and rings nowhere.

One thing that shocked me, was call display. His name shows up on the call display, even though he is using Voip. I've read so many times on this forum that the name feature cannot work with Voip because it uses the SIP protocol which is incompatible with the PSTN system. Yet, Primus somehow managed to get the name working. I'd love to know their secret so that maybe Vonage could get this working too.

I used to be a Primus customer, but just recently switched to Vonage. I love Vonage, no problems and excellent quality. Primus has the really bulky hardware, too big to travel with, and when I was talking on the phone it was very crackly.

The reason I'm asking about Bell Ultra is because I read in another forum that Rogers Extreme doesn't work very well Primus because there is actually no increase in bandwith, they just send the packets differently, and this screws up the Primus quality.

I am thinking that I want to get Bell Ultra, but I want to make sure there is no concerns with it.

Thanks.

There is an increase in bandwidth - Extreme is 5mbps. Regular is 3mbps. When I upgraded to Extreme, my downloads went from ~350KBps to 610KBps!!

Packets are sent the same way - it's just that the modem is authorized for a higher download speed.

Actually with some older Docsis modems, you can hack it yourself for higher download speeds - but I'm sure if you do it, and you're a heavy downloader, you'll be quickly kicked off the Rogers network.

No idea why this would only affect Primus - my Vonage phone works fine.

If Rogers were targetting all Voip service, everything from Vonage to Primus to MSN Video/Audio chat would be affected.
