Guys,

Regardless of the site I ping using pingplotter, Hop 2 always shows 100% packet loss. Is that something worry about? I'm rapidly reaching the limits of my network knowledge...

nah that's some internal comcast thing apparently. you're using windows ping, not pingplotter, unless you're just showing that for reference.

I exported the graph data from pingplotter - I promise. Wink maybe I'm not using it correctly. Do you have any hints as to the settings I should use in pingplotter to diagnose my problem?

ok I see. well it would be good to see a wired test, but if it's not possible then it's not possible. pingplotter needs to be run over a long period of time (like a day...as in 24 hours) or so to get a good graph. while I don't think it makes a big difference, you can check this thread out:

Well,

Would a better idea be to simply try Vonage and see what happens? Is it reasonable to sign up for their service (and hopefully get the first month free), try it for a couple of weeks, and if it works, *then* switch my phone numbers? And if doesn't work, just bag it?

Just for grins...have you tried to power cycle your modem?

Comcast has done a speed upgrade and almost all areas are now finnished. See if that helps.

Yep, have power cycled the modem. The upload/download speeds, particularly on other speed test websites, seem to be reasonable - it's the QoS that has me worried.

your packet loss and discards are a much bigger problem than that test's representation of data they call qos. doesn't really matter how varied your inet speed is when you can't get the packets anyway.

John,

At this point, do you have a suggestion as to what I should try in regards to packet loss?

Thanks,

pingplotter needs to be run over a long period of time (like a day...as in 24 hours) or so to get a good graph. this will show what hops are giving the packet loss. this is more of an isp issue at best. but many people use comcast here. you do have a 14 day trial if you want to give it a shot, but if you want confidence, I definitely can't give you that.
