I am in North Vancouver and started off on Telus DSL and recently switched to Shaw to do away with the Telus line all together. I am using the Linksys WRT54GP2 adapter and did a speed test before I left Telus and after I switched to Shaw. Here are my results from http://speedtest.broadbandreports.com:

2441/465 shaw
1165/519 telus

Performance on both systems for Voip was identical.

I am in Richmond on Shaw, using a PAP2 (but not with Vonage, with a local company called telnetphone.ca). I find that the speed tests of my connection can vary considerably, but my calls all go through perfectly, and my provider uses G.711 by default (which I think is the 90K setting on your bandwith saver). I have heard that my neighbourhood is on older network equipment, but it doesn't seem to affect my call quality. I have been using Voip on my cable line since August, and the PAP2 since the beginning of February.

I hope this helps.

Shaw is increasing the download speed of their high speed internet from 3Mbps to 5Mbps and their high speed xtreme internet from 5Mbps to 7Mbps. Upload speeds aren't mentioned in the news release. Check it out at http://www.shaw.ca/en-ca/ProductsServices/Internet/default.htm

Thanks for all who reply on this thread. Just sign-up today with Vonage and switching my ISP to Shaw within this week.

My local number is currently on process for transfer. I called them and they said it will take around 20 business days. After that, Bye bye Telus. Very Happy

I've been a Vonage customer since the day it was available in Canada. I moved to Coquitlam in September, and have been using the Vonage service w/Shaw regular high-speed internet with no problems. Downloading from usenet or a large-email message WILL affect your voice quality on calls, causing your connected parties voices to stutter. However, they won't notice any stuttering from your side.

I've very rarely had anyone complain about my voice quality (except the mother-in-law who hates anything new), and most don't even know I'm on Voip. The mother-in-law is an aberration, who complains constantly about the quality, and was doing so again the other night, but stopped after we mentioned we weren't calling from home, but from a friends landline Wink

So, no complaints, Vonage's service is great, but their support **** a$$. If you submit a ticket, expect anywhere from 1 week to a month to get a response.

Using standard Shaw hi-speed in Winnipeg with WRT54G and PAP2.... very very good service since January.

What an awesome service! The quality betters pots, especially the long distance calls...

It's been a month now since I got my Vonage using Shaw as my ISP and everything is working great. I'm one happy customer.

My first bill with Vonage was $96 because of overseas (Japan & Philippines) call that we have to make Cry

Good thing anywhere in North America is free, Now we got a chance to call my friends and relatives every month without worrying of long distance charges.

I am using Shaw and Vonage here in Calgary and it is working great. Initially (back in Nov/Dec 2004), I was experiencing some quality of service issues but swapped out my older Shaw modem for their latest and my QoS problems disappeared. Very Happy

I am having trouble signing up with Vonage because of Future Shops "open box" sale policy... once a customer has registered the MAC address of the modem (in my case the PAP2) in his name or created an account in his name, it apparently causes great amounts of hair pulling on Vonages part to get things straightened out and re-registered in my name. I'm in no rush, but their customer service has been great and they have been keeping me informed with prompt callbacks. I find it quite funny.

On a more serious issue, Shaw have been installing a packet filtering/identifier service known as Ellacoya in the major cities... I have some in serious issues about this considering they are in the process of rolling out their own Voip service, and it looks like they might tried to use Ellaycoya to identify foreign Voip telephony services and degrade using packet filtering/delaying techniques the Vonage orPrimus services. Ostensibly, Ellayacoya is being installed to identify bandwidth abusers who are using Bittorrent for file sharing. I see them using Ellacoya to also identify "foreign" Voip telephony users. I understand Shaw have a $10 fee to suspend the filtering service.

Anyone have any comments about this?
