After a lot of work, I think I've finally discovered the answer to this problem. When you order a business account, the fax line is free only if you use the number they assign you (you can still choose your area code). If you want to transfer an existing fax number from your local phone company (which to them is really just a second voice line), you have to go through the 'Add an Additional Line' process to order another line and then follow the same number transfer procedures you used to get your first number transferred. Unfortunately, this is not free. The 500 minute plan is an additional $12.99 a month, 1500 minutes is $34.99, and the unlimited is $44.99 per month. Probably still cheaper than regular phone service, but not free. P.S. Has anyone else noticed the attitudes of the sales reps? Every one I talked to seemed like I was bothering them by asking them questions. |

Take this from a Vonage expert: You can transfer a fax line. However, this is how it must be done. You request transfer of the number, go toyour web account and add a line, choose keep my existing number, enter your fax number, fillout necessary paperwork. When the transfer is completed call Vonage and request that the line be serviced as fax it will be 9.99 a month and it will get done in less than 24 hours |

I am in the process of doing this. I was unable to transfer my existing fax number to my new "dedicated fax line" which is included in the business account. So I had to add an additional line to do it.
If Vonage is willing to later move your "additional line" that you created just to transfer your fax number over as the "dedicated fax line", why wouldn't they just let you transfer the number when you activate the included "dedicated fax line" rather than just assign you a new number? |

You can not port a fax line if it is set as a designated fax line. It has to first be switched over to a regular basic phone line, port it over, then have Vonage switch that number to be your fax number.
If you are using a regular basic phone line as a fax line, just port it over and then you can have Vonage designate it as a fax line with them. |

I have heard from someone that if you port your fax number to Vonage, they will convert that to a voice line. But with that voice line, you can actually use the fax service if your fax unit also functions as a phone, so it is like a phone and fax in one unit. I have not tried this yet so I'm not sure if it will work. |

I was misinformed/duped by Vonage salesperson into thinking that I could port fax number. After waiting a long time my primary number ported. No fax number. They said it was because you cant port a fax number. You have to call it a phone number and then you can port it. This delayed my "free trial" --(not really free, in fact cost me $162.00 to disconnect later). The fax still didnt work. As a result I cancelled. Because Vonage maded false claims, delayed porting, and required me to port my number back to a "real phone company", I exceeded my "free" trial period. They charged me $ 162.00 to disconnect from a service that never properly worked. To hear Mr Oconnor say "that is the first I heard of this" is also a joke. He is trying to sell you on Vonage and will quickly delete this post. |

From customer service:

We understand from your email that you would like to whether you can change your additional line to a fax line later.
You cannot change your additional line to a fax line. As per the terms of service Vonage will apply a $39.99 disconnect fee to each line that is cancelled within one year of being activated.
