I am trying to get our Vonage service to work throughout our home but keep running into a problem. Here are the steps I've taken:
1. Plugin phone cord from wall to ATA router - standard phone cable. 2. Get dialtone, make a call - no problems for the first call. 3. Hangup
Problem: Second call can not be made because the first call didn't hangup correctly.
I am able to make 1 call without issue, but the call is never disconnected and when I return to make another call the line is dead or busy. For example, I call my cell phone and wait for my message then hangup. It doesn't matter how long I wait, when I try to make another call I have a busy tone since it never hung up properly after the call.
One other thing to note is that as soon as I plug the phone cord from my ATA router to the wall jack the big red light comes on and stays on.
I can make that first call from anywhere in the house, but it the last call I can make until I unplug the cord from the ATA router so it can reset the connection.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Does the ATA work properly if you unplug it from the wall jack and plug a telephone directly into the ATA? If it does, did you disconnect your phone company service from your internal telephone wiring at the phone companies network interface? You need to do this or you run the possibility of blowing up the ATA. |

Oldphoneguy,
It works fine when the phone is plugged directly into the ATA. I verified that our line was disconnected from the phone companies NI and had them come out to make sure. Dead silence on the wire inside the house and only powered phones work on the line now. Thanks for any help!

Sounds to me like you have proved the problem is with your internal wiring or jacks. Could be a corroded jack that is providing a high resistance short. |

That wouldn't surprise me, the home was built in the 70's and I cringe every time I have to pull off a phone jack due to the messy wiring.
Is there a particular profession that I could hire to come look at the wiring and fix any problems with it? I hesitate to call the phone company since we don't use them anymore. Thanks!

I would look up a reputable low voltage contractor. Look for a contractor whose speciality is voice and data wiring. Don't use an electrician. They only "think" they know how do do phone and data wiring. |

I hate to spend money not being sure of the problem since we had a phone in every room and never had any problems with our phone service. Could it be the type of phones we're using?
The problem only exists when we make a call a then hang up. If we turn on the phone to get a dial tone we can then hangup and get the dialtone again without issue. The problem only exists when we actually connect to another phone and then hangup. I'm just making sure I've clarified the situation. Thanks for your time and advice!

If you think it might be a phone issue, unplug all of your telephones from the wall jacks. Take the phone that always works when you plug it directly into the ATA and plug it into one of your jacks. Does it work properly? If it does then you may have an issue with one of your telephones. One at a time, substitute the good phone with one of your other phones until you find which telephone instrument is causing the trouble. If the phone that works all the time when you plug it directly into the ATA fails to work properly when it is the only phone connected to your house wiring you probably have wiring issue. |
