I have been on the net with a fixed IP via a Cisco 678 DSL modem for years without problems. I signed up for Vonage and have had it for a few days and am quite happy but I was not expecting that I would get another router when I ordered service ("telephone adapter" is not a router in my mind). Vonage.com suggests I can plug the Linksys they sent me into my wireless router but I have the original AirPort that does not have an Ethernet out port so I have to put it on the end of the chain. Phone and internet work great but now I am struggling how to pass through my ftp and http traffic up to my G4 (through the Linksys, and then through the AirPort to the Macintosh)... before I set up Port Mapping on the AirPort but now I can't get the Linksys to pass through specific ports as well... I have turned off DHCP in the Linksys (to avoid conflict with the AirPort DHCP server) and given the AirPort a fixed IP in the Static Routing tab, and then enabled ftp and http to the fixed IP for the AirPort in the Linksys Port Forwading tab, but am not having any luck. Curiously, my friend cannot even ping the fixed IP on the Linksys, though he can ping the gateway for it at the ISP. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks much.

UPnP didn't want to stay turned on, so I tried the regular Port Forwarding, and it worked... I also had the IP address on the AirPort set wrong... and turning off Block Anonymous Internet Requests fixed the pinging problem

Here is a diagram on how Vonage recommends connection for something like your setup. The problem with this setup is that Quality Of Service (Qos), which concerns us most, here, is voice quality. So I recommend that the RT31P2 is placed first and the Airport second. Yes, the RT31P2 is a router with two ATA's built in. One each per RJ-11 jack.

Set the RT31P2 and the Airports DHCP servers to "Obtain an IP Automatically". There will not be any conflict between devices. If you want to set everything as "Static", I don't know what IP addresses are available on the Airport, so I can't advise you there. The RT31P2 will run addresses from 192.168.15.100 through 192.168.15.149 Most folks set up automatic DHCP unless your ISP is different. You should not have to alter any ports for normal operation.

How to Make RT31P2 “Pingable”:

1. Access Web-based Utility http://192.168.15.1
2. From the “Setup” function, click on “Security“, then go to “Filters”
3. Go to “Filter MAC Address”
4. Set the “Block Anonymous Internet Requests” radio buttons to “Disable”
5. Click “Save Changes” and “Ok” to adapter reset.
6. Remember to “Enable” function when done.

That should solve your "ping" problem.

I hope that I have been of some help to you. Linksys devices are a little difficult to understand at first, but after awhile, I'm sure you will come to trust them exclusively, as I do.
